EVERETT -- The number of cheerleaders and other people who became ill with vomiting and diarrhea after attending a statewide competition at Comcast Arena last weekend continues to grow, with 36 people in Snohomish County reporting they were sickened.

wasn't just cheerleaders...i've had it since early AM monday just able to leave the house today, my wife was sicker last night than she's been in the 48 years i've known her and four friends were sick with it starting late sunday night..all lasted 36-60 hours or so.... i think deeper searches need to be conducted...as in contents of mass produced goods. in my opinion, it's too coincidental for 'food poisoning' amongst those in my circle (all S Kitsap residents) and these other folks to have 'unexplained illnesses' with symptoms alike and occuring in the same time frame.

OLYMPIA -State and local health officials are investigating a possible intestinal illness outbreak among attendees of a cheerleading competition in Everett last weekend. Thousands of people attended the event at Everett?s Comcast Arena on February 4; onset of symptoms reportedly began on February 5 and 6. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.
The Washington State Department of Health is working closely with the Snohomish Health District on the investigation. The cause and source of the illnesses, as well as the total number of people sickened, are unknown. Teams and supporters from around the state participated.
The investigation is in the early stages and includes sending a questionnaire to participants as well as collecting samples for testing at the state Public Health Laboratories. People who attended the event and have severe symptoms are advised to contact a health care provider.
According the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), which hosted the event, more than 3,000 people attended, and more than 1,000 competed in the State Cheerleading and Salute to Spirit in cheer and dance/drill.
?Our immediate concerns are for those who have been affected by this illness and our thoughts are with them,? said WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese. ?The WIAA appreciates the cooperation of Comcast Arena and of state and local health partners for addressing the entire scope of this situation.?

Norovirus identified as bug that sickened attendees at cheer/dance event

OLYMPIA - Testing at the state Public Health Laboratories confirms that norovirus caused hundreds of illnesses during and after the February 4 state high school cheerleading tournament. Norovirus is typically transmitted person-to-person.

The number of people reporting they suffered vomiting and diarrhea during the event or in the days after is now 229. At least 33 have reported seeking medical care though there have been no overnight hospital admissions. The numbers are expected to grow as state health officials receive answers from surveys that were sent to participants and families.

The Washington State Department of Health is leading the disease investigation, working with local health partners and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) (www.wiaa.com/News.aspx?ID=211&Mon=2&Yr=2012), sponsor of the event in Everett.

As part of the investigation, questionnaires were sent to participants and their families and stool samples were collected for testing; results today confirmed norovirus. People who attended the event and have severe symptoms are advised to contact a health care provider. About 3,000 people attended the event and more than 1,000 competed.

Intestinal illnesses can be caused by several viruses and bacteria that may come from a wide variety of sources. Norovirus causes illness among RadCon attendees

Local health officials have confirmed that some attendees at a popular science fiction convention last weekend caught norovirus.

Samples from ill attendees tested positive for norovirus, Benton-Franklin Health District officials said Friday.

Norovirus is a group of highly contagious viruses that infect the stomach and intestines.

Some of RadCon's more than 2,000 attendees complained of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and came down with the symptoms and recovered rapidly.

Attendees at other public events, schools and sports teams also have reported similar symptoms, according to the health district.
