Express News Service , The New Indian Express

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government embarked on a massive culling operation at Keranga village, about 35 km from here, even as avian influenza triggered panic across the State. Tense villagers stormed some of the poultry firms and even decamped with the birds prompting police action.
...
The region, where culling has been ordered, has a total domestic poultry bird population of 40,000 and the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, which is carrying out the mass killing, with help from Health Department and Khurda district administration, could take 10 days to complete the operation. The culling exercise started at about 9 am in the area as soon as the RRTs and logistics were ready. The authorities readied a deep pit for mass burial of the culled birds.
...

In Jagatsinghpur district, the Government kept a close watch as Raghunathpur village in Kujang had reported bird deaths. Surveillance teams were pressed into service to inspect mortality while restriction on movement of the birds was also imposed.
Meanwhile, the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory, Bhopal, has confirmed one crow sample, sent from Keranga, H5N1 positive.
Although rampant crow deaths have been reported from across the State, it is for the first time one has been tested H5N1 positive.
Health experts apprehended that the mass deaths of crows could be caused by West Nile Virus which affects birds and has a high killing rate.

They feast on dead crows for health

Express News Service Last Updated : 13 Jan 2012 12:26:01 PM IST
ROURKELA: Even as the scare of Ranikhet Disease (RD) gained ground with death of crows being reported from Bonai and Sundargarh on Wednesday, oblivious of the health risks, a fringe population in Rourkela city are merrily feasting on dead crows, both for the palate and to get rid of some ailments.
A daily-wage earner Dayal Badaik of Azad Basti at Sector 20 recently found three dead crows and took them home for a family feast.
Unaware of the RD virus causing widespread death of crows, Badaik on Thursday said he found the crows floundering on the ground and soon they died. Badaik said the meat had a gamy smell and flavour.
...

Mysterious death of crows has been unusually high for the past fortnight around the Rourkela House localities, but the incident remained unnoticed for lack of awareness. A garbage lifter of an NGO, Dilip Bag said he has disposed of 30 to 40 dead crows.

It sounds as if a massive public health campaign to prevent consumption of dead crows and sick poultry (and any other birds come to that) is necessary here and in the wider region: a tough challenge in an area where there is great poverty and food scarcity.

Biological Hazard in India on Sunday, 15 January, 2012 at 07:04 (07:04 AM) UTC.
Description
Betanoti in Mayurbhanj district is in grip of a scare after preliminary reports on Saturday indicated that a poultry bird sample from the town had confirmed the presence of bird flu, official sources said. "We are awaiting the final report. I am leaving for Mayurbhanj tomorrow," Benudhar Das, director of veterinary services, told TOI. The presence of the virus has already been confirmed in Keranga (Khurda district), where the government continued culling of poultry birds for the third consecutive day on Saturday. Keranga is the only area in Odisha where presence of H5N1 has been confirmed. In all, 31,175 birds have been culled and 16,551 eggs and 197 kg of poultry feed have been destroyed during the exercise, official sources said. "We believe culling operations in Keranga will be over within a day or two," an officer said. Over 35,000 hens and ducks are expected to be culled in the district. Official sources said though Bhubaneswar reported the mysterious death of some crows, incidents of other such deaths from other parts of the state declined on Saturday. On Friday, 54 crow bodies were disposed, official sources said. "We are yet to get confirmation if the crow deaths were due to bird flu, but we are taking all measures to dispose off dead birds in a hygienic manner," an officer said. Officials said that the administration has started focusing on clearing the litter caused during the ongoing culling operation and sanitising the 19 villages spread over a three km radius from the epicentre.
Biohazard name: H5N1 (highly pathogenic avian influenza virus)

Comment: Are we able to determine from reports if a ban on all movement in poultry throughout (and beyond) the affected area is in place? If not I can see this spreading across India. Any such ban would need to extend beyond the habitual flying distance of crows, as the infection transmission is likely a cycle involving both species. At least crows do not (as far as I can tell from my searches) migrate.

Crow facts: http://www.crowbusters.com/facts.htm
Crows are called short distance migrants. Some may only move a few miles from the nesting territory to ones that move a few hundred miles. This seems to occur more in the northern climates where winters get fairly harsh.

Khurda to Mayurbhanj: Bird flu fear spreads

Express News Service Last Updated : 16 Jan 2012 11:22:43 AM IST
BHUBANESWAR: The focal point of bird flu has now shifted to Betanati in Mayurbhanj. With culling coming to an end at Keranga in Khurda district, where it all started a week ago, the Government is now waiting for an advisory from the Centre to take its next course of action in the northern Odisha district.
The Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (FARD) department, which received the confirmation reports from the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal, has asked the Director, Veterinary Services, Benudhar Das, to rush to Mayurbhanj to take stock of the situation.
Since Betanati block is contiguous to Jharkhand where the avian influenza has been reported, the virus is believed to have spread from across the border. The area, however, does not have any organised poultry farms and most birds are part of the backyard poultry. Official sources said poultry bird population could be in the range of 4,000.
As the locals celebrate Makar Sankranti by feasting on meat, FARD sources apprehend that some of the birds may already have been consumed. Since the Centre has asked for additional information on the poultry mortality and other pattern, the advisory is expected in the next couple of days. Meanwhile, death of a few chickens in Jadupur village of Bhubaneswar sparked off panic in the area. The bird flu surveillance team even picked up a live bird for collecting swab sample. The Animal Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) will send a team to Jadupur on Monday for collection of fresh samples. ?There is no unusual mortality in the area and there is no reason to panic,? a FARD department official said.

Central team checks on avian health in Chilika
TNN | Jan 17, 2012, 01.03AM IST

BERHAMPUR/ BHUBANESWAR: A Central expert team visited Chilika lake on Monday to study the symptoms of bird flu among migratory birds in the wake of the H5NI virus detected in birds at Keranga and Betanati in Khurda and Mayurbhanj districts respectively.

The two-member surveillance team observed the behaviour of migratory birds in the lake, particularly in the Nalabana bird sanctuary area, said a senior officer of Chilika wildlife division. Among the 8,83,060 birds of 167 different species counted in the lake this winter, 3.18 lakh of them were sighted in Nalabana bird sanctuary area alone, official sources said.
