Mass crow death in Paradip triggers panic
TNN | Dec 27, 2011, 04.10AM IST

KENDRAPADA: Death of many crows in the port town of Paradip on Sunday and Monday has triggered panic among residents, who have been advised by forest and veterinary officials not to touch the carcasses.

"Around 50 crows died in Paradip on Sunday and Monday. People of the affected areas were instructed not to handle the dead crows without gloves. They were also instructed to bury the dead crows by digging deep holes so that the disease cannot spread to more areas," said Dr Premananda Rout, chief district veterinary officer (CDVO) of Jagatsinghpur on Monday.

"The panic is caused by the simple fact that crows tend to hover over human settlements and stay in close contact with humans. Recently many crows have died due to the deadly bird flu disease or H5N1 virus in areas of Jharkhand, bordering Odisha," Rout said.

A two member team of Animal Disease Research Laboratory (ADRL), under the leadership of Dr Chita Ranhan Swain, the project director of ADRL, and Dr Jagadish Mohanty, collected samples of 10 dead crows in Paradip on Monday, which will be sent to Bhopal's Indian Veterinary Research Institute to ascertain the cause of the crows' largescale death, Rout said. "It is very difficult to comment on reasons behind the deaths till we receive a detailed report, expected in a week's time. We are taking suitable measures and seeking views of experts about the deaths of crows," he said.

Crow death specter spreads to Jajpur
TNN | Dec 30, 2011, 12.41PM IST

KENDRAPADA: The mysterious epidemic that claimed many crows in the port town of Paradip recently has now spread to Jajpur Road of Jajpur district, with about 150 crow deaths reported in Jajpur Road area over the past two days, triggering panic among residents who have been advised by experts not to touch the carcasses.

"Recently many crows have died due to the deadly bird flu disease or H5N1 virus in areas of Jharkhand, bordering Odisha. We are on the alert since the crows started dying in Jajpur Road," said Dr Kailash Chandra Mohanty, chief district veterinary officer (CDVO) of Jajpur on Thursday...

...Swain suspects Pasturella, E-coli viruses are largely responsible for the abrupt rise in death of crows in Paradip and Jajpur Road. "Bulging eyes, constant fluid discharge from the mouth, moderation in feather flap, imbalance in their posture are a few symptoms of the crows affected by the Pasturella and E-coil virus," he said.

"In the past few weeks, we have noticed a relative increase in the death of crows and possibly it could be due to these viruses but we need to corroborate the claims with a medical report...

Vets step up surveillance for bird flu
Express News Service , The New Indian Express

BARIPADA: Close on the heels of the outbreak of bird flu in Jharkhand, the bordering villages in the tribal-dominated district of Mayurbhanj have been put on alert. Veterinary officials have been asked to inspect chicken farms and hatcheries.
Sources said scores of crows were found dead in Khunta on Monday pressing the panic button among the residents and the poultry farm owners. As mass death of crows was reported from Ranchi, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Dumka in Jharkhand due to the H5N1 variant of bird flu, the poultry traders of Mayurbhanj belt close to these areas are a scared lot.
...

Chief District Veterinary Officer Nityananda Das said four teams, including three veterinary mobile teams, have been constituted for regular checking of vehicles importing chicken.
The veterinary officials have so far collected around 160 blood samples of poultry and chicken from the farms in Tiring, Bahalda, Kusumi, Raruan, Sarashkana, Bijatala, Gorumohisani and Jamda blocks.
"The blood samples have been sent to Animals Disease Research Institute (ADRI) for tests,? he said adding no positive case has been found yet.
Das suspects that the crows died due to severe cold in about three to five days. ?We have collected a few dead crows from Khunta and sent to ADRI for lab test,? he added.

Re: Mass crow death in Paradip and Jajpur triggers panic - H5N1 confirmed in two poultry samples, 35k birds to be culled

Crows are scavengers, but do flock - so the question is, is the H5N1 being transmitted between crows or are they picking this up via their diets (and if so, what?); and, does the pattern of confirmed poultry infections match the pattern of crow deaths? If the answer is no, two possibilities spring to mind a) that crows have become a significant vector in this region or b) there is another animal in the crow food chain that is carrying the virus.

It would be good to know the answers.

Another possibility is that if there are widespread poultry deaths and bodies have not been properly disposed of, they are scavenging the carcasses - but the media reports are not indicating this.
