Typhoid outbreak in interior of Naitasiri

There is a typhoid outbreak in the interior of Naitasiri, mainly in the villagers of Sawanikula, Narokorokoyawa, Nasau and Korovou, whereby more than 100 people have been medically checked for the illness.

However, the confirmed number of cases is still yet to be finalized.

Medical staffs on the ground have confirmed that the outbreak is serious, they have placed a curfew for the villagers, and the doctors have been making regular visits to monitor the situation...

TEN people from four villages in the interior of Naitasiri have been hospitalised as a result of a typhoid outbreak, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.

The villages of Nasava, Narokorokoyawa, Korovou and Sawanikula in Wainimala were placed under curfew as a team from the Ministry of Health was dispatched to the area, said deputy secretary Public Health Dr Jo Koroivueta.

"No deaths were recorded. The 10 that were hospitalised have been released. The people from the villages can also move around now," he said.

"Now the vaccination team will be visiting the areas to vaccinate the villagers. The villages affected this time are different from the ones that were affected last time...

Typhoid fever oubreak in Fiji’s Natisiri contained, says Health Ministry

Fiji’s Ministry of Health says it has contained a typhoid fever oubreak in Natisiri and will start a mass vaccination programme in the affected area next week.

The deputy secretary for Public Health, Dr Jo Koroivueta, says the latest typhoid outbreak affected people from eight remote villages and broke out two weeks ago...

Fiji still needs to address underlying causes of tyhoid fever says expert

A communicable diseases expert in the Pacific region, Dr Jacob Kool, says Fiji still needs to address the underlying causes of typhoid fever to prevent regular outbreaks of the disease.

Fiji’s Ministry of Health has confirmed at least 10 people from eight villages in the interior of Naitasiri were hospitalised as a result of the latest typhoid outbreak that’s now been contained...

Health warns of typhoid outbreak

10 people are admitted at the Vunidawa hospital suffering from typhoid says health spokesperson Peni Namotu.

Namotu says people are advised to take extra precautions given the wet weather and there are other outbreaks of disease being reported from various hospitals and health centres...

Fiji Imposes Ban On Public Gatherings Over Fears Of Typhoid Outbreak

SUVA, May 11 (Bernama) -- Fiji's Ministry of Health on Wednesday imposed a temporary blanket ban on all public gatherings in the Bua province from Wednesday following fear of a major typhoid outbreak in the area.

The Ministry of Health has recorded 41 cases of typhoid in the province since January, according to China's Xinhua news agency.

Namotu adds a reduction in the number of people suffering from typhoid has also been recorded.

A public health emergency was imposed for the province of Bua after a large number of people were reported to have fallen ill from typhoid.

One person died in February and Namotu says the Health Ministry is doing all it can to contain the disease.

However he says they have received positive results recently which show that the public is adhering to their advice

149 typhoid cases in Fiji

A total of 149 cases of Typhoid have been recorded in Fiji till date.

Speaking to Fijilive, Ministry of Health (MOH) spokesman, Peni Namotu said 42 cases have been recorded in Bua, 71 in the Northern division and six in the Central.

TYPOID is on the rise in the Western Division after eight serious cases were recorded at the Lautoka Hospital last month.

This was confirmed by Lautoka Hospital medical consultant Doctor Deo Narayan.

The new cases recorded were three from Sabeto district, two from Lautoka and one each from Nadi, Nadroga and Ba.

Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said the increase in typhoid cases showed that members of the public had neglected to heed of advice from the ministry. "The increase shows that people are not practising health hygiene and it is important for people to always take note of the health awareness campaigns," he said.

TYPHOID outbreak in Bua has caused the postponement of the inaugural CMF Nasolo rugby sevens and netball tournament.

The tournament which was initially planned for early October was stopped twice by the Ministry of Health (MOH) due to the rising number of typhoid cases in the villages around the district.

However, tournament organising committee member Benau Vuniwaqa told Times Sports yesterday they have received a confirmation letter from MOH giving the green light for the tournament to be held on November 4 and 5.

"The ministry cancelled the tournament because there will be parcels (food) and grog on sale at the tournament.

"The grog is banned by the ministry due to the typhoid alert," Vuniwaqa said.

"We have received a confirmation and pretty sure the tournament won't be postponed any further..."

Village under quarantine after typhoid outbreak

A VILLAGE in the Navosa highlands has been closed off to the outside world as a typhoid outbreak forced the closure of a school this week.

More than 50 per cent of the people of Nanoko village as well as students are believed to have been infected.

Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki said the villagers and students had been given an ultimatum to remain in the village for 21 days.

A team of health officers was deployed to the village early this week to prevent the disease from spreading to other parts of the area.

He said the villagers were quarantined and no one was allowed to move out of the village until the disease was fully contained.

Typhoid puts 29 in hospital

TWENTY-NINE villagers of Nanoko in Navosa have been hospitalised after a typhoid outbreak in the village.

Village headman Epeli Tavaiqia said the spread of typhoid was a serious concern as more than 60 villagers and schoolchildren were suspected to be infected with the disease.

He said health officers had placed a curfew for villagers to remain in the village for 12 days until the disease was fully contained.

Mr Tavaiqia said the latest victims to be hospitalised was a man and his three children.

He said the Navatusila District School and Thomas Baker Memorial High School were forced to close early last week.

"The spread of typhoid is a threat to the villagers since this is the first time this number of villagers are infected," he said.

"Some villagers have been discharged from hospitals, some are at the hospitals and some are waiting for the outcome of the tests.

"Altogether there are more than 60 people being treated and many more villages are expected to be admitted to hospitals this week," said Mr Tavaiqia.

Another six typhoid cases

A FEW days after a typhoid outbreak in Nanoko Village in Navosa, health reports have emerged that it has spread to a nearby village.

It has been confirmed that six new cases were recorded in Tuvavatu Village in the highlands of Navosa.

Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said a health team had been deployed to the area to help the nurse serving the area.

Mr Namotu urged villagers to boil all their drinking water and not drink creek water.

A public health emergency has been declared at Nanoko Village, Navosa starting tomorrow; December 12 to January 12, next year.

This was after a number of confirmed cases in typhoid in the area increased from five to 39 after health officials visited the area last week.
Ministry of Health spokesman Peni Namotu yesterday confirmed there is restriction of movements of villagers and there is a ban on mass gatherings during the ban.

?The outbreak is confined to Nanoko Village in Navosa,? Mr Namotu said.

THE people of typhoid hot spot Bua have been advised to maintain hygienic practices to ward off any fresh outbreak of typhoid.

Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said currently the typhoid problem was confined to Nanoko village in the highlands of Navosa, where 29 cases have been reported.

FIVE Nanoko villagers have been charged for breaching the month-long public health emergency regulation placed on the village by the Health Ministry.

Health spokesman Peni Namotu and police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed this yesterday.

Mr Namotu said the typhoid outbreak in the area prompted the ministry to enforce a state of emergency after 39 confirmed cases were recorded in the village.

Insp Sokomuri said the five included two couples and a child who were caught escaping from the village to spend Christmas in urban centres last week...

THE TYPHOID outbreak at Nanoko in Ba is continuing to haunt the village after three villagers were rushed to Lautoka Hospital last Friday.

This was confirmed by hospital medical consultant Dr Deo Narayan yesterday.

He said two were in serious condition after being airlifted by helicopter from Nanoko Village.

"The three are in serious condition," he said, adding the two were lucky to have reached the hospital in time after being flown in by helicopter.

"All patients have been treated and it is likely that they will spend more time in the hospital..."
