Fresh outbreak of polio recorded in Kebbi, Jigawa
By Ajewole Ebenezer
April 6, 2011 02:34AM

Four new cases of the wild polio virus have been recorded in Kebbi and Jigawa States, in a shocking reversal that underscores the continued threat posed by the disease in Nigeria.

The new cases brings to five the number of cases of the wild polio virus, which cripples and even kills children, recorded so far in the country in 2011.

Nigeria is one of only four countries across the world where the wild polio virus is still found. The others are Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

Reacting to the discovery of the new cases of the wild polio virus in the two northern states, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Muhammed Ali Pate said the affected states are conducting a "mop-up" vaccination campaign with the support of the NPHCDA and international development partners to eradicate the virus.

Mr Ali Pate also said that despite Nigeria's progress in polio eradication, the virus is still a threat to the Nigerian child. He called for the support of state and local government to ensure that every single child under five years of age receives the polio vaccine...

Polio resurgence in Nigeria could reverse gains: UNICEF
Northern Nigeria has seen signs of a resurgence of polio cases, threatening to erase gains that had...

Northern Nigeria has seen signs of a resurgence of polio cases, threatening to erase gains that had led to the near eradication of the disease in the country, UNICEF officials said Tuesday.

"In recent times, we have made some commendable strides in our commitment to kick polio out of Nigeria...," said deputy head of the UN children's fund for Nigeria, Jacques Boyer.

"However, there are challenges in sustaining the progress made in polio eradication as Nigeria is currently experiencing new polio outbreaks."

Polio cases in Nigeria dropped to 21 in 2010 from a staggering 338 cases in 2009.

But "as at this month, 20 cases of wild polio virus were reported in six states" in the north, Boyer told a gathering of traditional and religious leaders in the northern city of Kano.

"It is clear from the figures that we are beginning to lose some of the grounds covered in our polio eradication efforts."

The World Health Organisation has pledged to stop polio transmission by the end of the year and to stamp out the crippling virus worldwide by 2012.

"We have come too far in our fight against polio to contemplate a relapse. Complacency is probably the biggest danger that might jeopardise success in eradicating polio," Boyer told the community leaders.

The change has been blamed on a decrease in vaccinations for the highly contagious virus, which has been a problem in the past in Nigeria.

Between 2003 and 2004, the Nigerian state of Kano suspended polio immunisation for 13 months following allegations by some Muslim clerics that the virus was laced with substances that could render girls infertile.

They alleged it was part of a US-led Western plot to depopulate Africa,...

Nigerian Polio Outbreak Is A Cause For Concern
Posted on 26. Oct, 2011 by Louise MacLean in Lifestyle

A mutated polio vaccine is causing major problems in Nigeria.

October 27, 2011- Health officials in Nigeria are fighting an unusual polio outbreak. The officials have said a mutating polio vaccine is the cause for the outbreak. However, they said the only way to remedy the situation is to continue to vaccinate the children in Nigeria.

World Health Organization officials fear news of the recent outbreak will be detrimental to the efforts of eradicating the disease in the northern part of Nigeria. In 2003, vaccinations were stopped for close to a year when rumors circulated that Muslim girls became sterilized from the vaccine or that it contained the HIV virus that caused AIDS. During just that short time span of no vaccinations, polio spread to other countries.

Officials denied they had maintained the outbreak a secret and said no one realized until a short time ago that close to 70 of the last 1,300 Nigeria polio cases was from the mutant vaccine virus instead of the ?wild type? that caused the majority of polio cases...

Polio in Nigeria 'shows big increase'

A four-fold increase in polio has been reported in Nigeria, with the disease spreading to other countries, a World Health Organisation official says.

Forty-three cases were reported in Nigeria this year, compared to 11 last year, the official, Thomas Moran, said.

Curbing the polio virus in Nigeria is key to eradicating the crippling disease in Africa, he said.

In 2003, northern Nigeria's Muslim leaders leaders opposed vaccinations, claiming they could cause infertility.

Nigeria is one of four countries in the world - along with Pakistan, India and Afghanistan - where polio is still a major health risk.

15 million children receive polio vaccine

NIGERIA has recorded 400 per cent increase in polio cases in one year, with 44 cases in 2011 compared to 11 cases by this time in 2010.

According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) latest report on Nigeria, ?two cases of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) were reported last week, both in Kano State. The total number of cases for 2011 is now 44.

The most recent case had onset of paralysis on October 15, in Kumbotso district. The other case reported last week was in Gaya district - a district which had not previously reported a case of WPV this year.?

The state's Immunization Officer, Aliyu Idris, told Daily Trust yesterday that the fresh cases were confirmed in January by results of tests conducted overseas.

Reports last year indicated only one case of the disease in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of the state, and it was attributed to rejection of the polio vaccine.

He attributed the fresh outbreaks to non-compliance or rejection of vaccine and non-coverage of some areas...

Polio Constitutional Debate Brews in Nigeria
Posted Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 at 3:20 pm

A constitutional debate is under way in Nigeria over whether the government can prosecute parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated against polio, or if it has the power to force parents to have their children vaccinated against any communicable disease.

The debate comes on the heels of a resolution by the government of Nigeria's northern Kano state to prosecute any parent who refuses to have their children receive the oral vaccine against the highly contagious disease...

...The U.N. children's agency, UNICEF, has been pressuring Nigeria's northern states to promote vaccination against polio. But efforts to contain it have been complicated by rumors that the vaccine is harmful to children and by discover of 15 new polio cases in Kano state.

Nigeria
Polio situation update March 2012

Nigeria is one of the most entrenched reservoirs of wild poliovirus in the world.
It is the only country with on-going transmission of all three serotypes:
wild poliovirus type 1, wild poliovirus type 3, and circulating vaccine-derived
poliovirus type 2. Nigeria remains the only polio-endemic country in Africa.
As of 2nd of March, already four (4) new cases of wild poliovirus have been
reported from Borno, Sokoto, Kaduna and Zamfara States.
With 62 WPV cases in 2011, Nigeria is experiencing a surge of polio. The
programme is addressing challenges in campaign quality and community
engagement whilst dealing with a deteriorating security situation. States
like Kaduna, Kano, Yobe and Sokoto have faced repeated threats or incidents
of violence during the first two months of 2012, and bombings and killings have become almost routine occurrences in Borno. The worsening security situation in these states risks further declines in campaign coverage

Polio this week - As of 04 April 2012

...

Nigeria

Four new cases were reported in the past week (one type WPV3 case from Bauchi State, two type WPV3 cases from Borno State, and one type WPV1 case from Yobe State). All four of the cases had onset of paralysis in 2012, bringing the total number of cases in 2012 to 17. The most recent case was one of the new WPV3 cases from Borno State, with onset of paralysis on 7 March. The total number of cases for 2011 remains 62.
The recent increase inWPV3 is concerning in the context of globally low levels of WPV3.
The Expert Review Committee on Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization (ERC) met in Abuja on 28-29 March 2012, to review the latest epidemiology and impact of the national polio emergency action plan. The group noted that polio eradication efforts in the country are now an emergency, in particular as case numbers in 2011 and 2012 continue to increase. More than 1/3rd of children in the high-risk states of Borno, Kano, Sokoto and Yobe remain under-immunized (<4 doses of oral polio vaccine ? OPV). In the last six months, 95% of all cases occurred in 8 high-risk states, and 80% of all cases in just 5 states: Borno, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto and Zamfara. The bulk of all cases are from known high-risk Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The national polio emergency action plan, the implementation of which is overseen by the Presidential Task Force, clearly puts in place measures to immunize more children more consistently in the high-risk states, also in order to protect polio-free areas. Operating in an emergency ?modus operandi?, efforts will focus on the faster identification of problems during immunization campaigns, focusing resources to the highest-risk areas, and ensuring full accountability at all levels. New accountability mechanisms have been put in place, beginning with oversight from President Goodluck Jonathan. With the national Task Force mirrored at state-levels, clear accountability frameworks have been established for programme performance at the LGA-level.
To ensure consistency in approach, senior staff from the National Task Force will now formally consult with priority northern states and LGAs, to establish clear and common coordination mechanisms and assign roles and responsibilities.
Although key risks and challenges clearly remain, the ERC concluded that Nigeria has all the tools to rapidly improve the quality of operations to immunize more children and to eradicate polio. The challenge is to fully and consistently implement the national polio emergency action plan.
Supplementary immunization activities that started on 31 March have just ended.
An environmental surveillance mission was conducted during 26-31 March to expand the frequency of sample collection in Kano and identify new sites in Sokoto. This type of assertive environmental surveillance is necessary for finding all remaining reservoirs of polio virus.
