Chickenpox vaccinations offered at Lakeville schools after outbreak reported

LAKEVILLE -- Another case of chickenpox at a Lakeville elementary school has prompted a two-day vaccination.

The Union-North United School Corp. on Monday confirmed the eighth case of chickenpox to hit LaVille Elementary School.

The outbreak prompted school corporation officials to offer limited vaccinations at LaVille Elementary and LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School this week before Thanksgiving.

LaVille Elementary School, in Lakeville, Ind., has eight confirmed cases of chickenpox. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), five or more cases qualify as an ?outbreak.?

?This is the most we've ever had and I?ve been here almost twenty years,? Principal John Farthing said.

The school has set up a free vaccine clinic with help from the Marshall and St. Joseph Counties Health Departments.

On Tuesday, they provided more than 100 children with vaccines...

MIDDLEBURY ? Students attending Middlebury schools who are not vaccinated by the end of Thursday for the chicken pox will have to stay out of school for up to three weeks because of a chicken pox outbreak in the school corporation.

Elkhart County?s Health Officer Dr. Dan Nafziger said that the school corporation had reported 13 cases to the health department with the initial case reported on Nov. 11. The state defines an outbreak as 3 or more cases in individuals older than 13 years old or five or more cases in individuals younger than 13 years old, he said. The cases are concentrated at Middlebury Elementary, Heritage Intermediate and Northridge Middle School.

Middlebury Superintendent Jim Conner said that there are around 550 students in Middlebury Community Schools who are not up-to-date with the required varicella vaccines. The majority of those, Conner said, are students who have not yet received their second vaccine in sixth grade. Others have not been vaccinated on religious grounds.

Parents chafe at vaccines despite illness outbreak

MIDDLEBURY, Ind.? Dozens of parents in a northern Indiana school district that has seen an outbreak of chicken pox could be forced to keep their children out of school for weeks because they aren't vaccinated against the illness.

Officials with the Indiana State Department of Health and Elkhart County Health Department have instructed Middlebury Community Schools that unvaccinated students cannot attend school until 21 days after the last reported case of chicken pox.

The outbreak prompted schools to offer vaccine clinics, but more than 50 students in the district still lacked vaccinations.

Some parents say they would rather deal with the illness than possible side effects, while others argue the vaccinations violate their religious beliefs.

Nafziger said he respects parents' right to not vaccinate their children but that not vaccinating puts them and other children at risk.

The Middlebury outbreak is the second in northern Indiana in recent weeks. Union-North United School Corp. in Lakeville had at least eight cases of chickenpox at LaVille Elementary School as of Nov. 21.

First case at Jefferson Elementary; previous 13 at Middlebury Elementary, Heritage Intermediate and Northridge Middle School.

MIDDLEBURY ? Middlebury Community Schools has reported its 14th case of the chicken pox since mid-November.

Superintendent Jim Conner said that this is the first case at Jefferson Elementary. The previous 13 had been at Middlebury Elementary, Heritage Intermediate and Northridge Middle School.

Last week, the Elkhart County Health Department, in consultation with the Indiana State Department of Health, determined the original 13 cases to be an outbreak. The county health department instructed the school system that unvaccinated students may not attend school until three weeks after the last reported case.
