LUCKNOW: Meningitis is believed to have taken many lives in the city since July, but government hospitals cannot confirm the fact.

President of Lucknow Association of Practising Pathologist and Microbiologists (LAPPM), Dr P K Gupta said, "Meningitis is not a disease. It is a symptom which is caused by various agents. More than anything else, it is important to know the cause of meningitis. A culture test needs to be done to ascertain the reason."

The government hospitals in the city are not equipped for holding culture test. "We send the samples to regional diagnostic laboratory for confirmation," said Dr E U Siddiqui, chief medical superintendent, Civil Hospital.
