First West Nile Human Case Found in New York [city]

City health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in New York this season.

The Health Department said a 61-year-old Bronx man contracted the virus and was hospitalized. It said the man also had meningitis. A health department spokeswoman said she didn't know when the man was admitted.

Last month, a 66-year-old Long Island woman was identified as having the state's first confirmed case of West Nile virus this year. She became ill on July 5, and was recovering at home.

Three cases of West Nile virus were seen in NY dwellers in 2009 and 15 in 2008.

West Nile virus infection, spread by mosquitoes, can cause a mild or moderate flu-like illness or sometimes no symptoms at all. In some people age 50 and older, it can cause a serious and potentially fatal infection of the brain and spinal cord.

The announcement came a little over a month after mosquitoes in Dongan Hills tested positive for the insect-borne virus, and as the department wages an aggressive spraying campaign to control the mosquito population.

The women, ages 74 and 46, have both received hospital care, according to Dr. Sally Slavinski, assistant director of the Zoonotic, Influenza and Vector-borne Disease Unit of the department's Bureau of Communicable Diseases
