Quake death toll rises in southern Chile

Updated: 06:47, Tuesday March 2, 2010

Conditions in southern Chile have grown more desperate for survivors of Saturday's earthquake as the death toll continues to rise.

Uncertainty has caused long lines of worried drivers at the gas stations that remain open, and hoarding in supermarkets.

Concepcion is the main transit point for gas distribution throughout the southern Lakes region of Chile.

But with bridges and roads damaged, there is uncertainty about what's ahead in the near-term despite assurances from gas distributors that there is enough gas to meet demand for at least the next two weeks.

On the road leading out of the southern coastal city Valdivia, almost all gas stations were closed.

'We are not sure when the roads will be fixed. It could be awhile, so people are stocking up,' said Francisca Romero, 41, a housewife who lives just outside of Valdivia.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has declared a state of emergency.

The preliminary death count is at least 723 people dead with hundreds injured and missing and at least 2 million people displaced.

About 500,000 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged.

Chilean Quake Likely Shifted Earth’s Axis, NASA Scientist Says

By Alex Morales

March 1 (Bloomberg) -- The earthquake that killed more than 700 people in Chile on Feb. 27 probably shifted the Earth’s axis and shortened the day, a National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientist said.

Earthquakes can involve shifting hundreds of kilometers of rock by several meters, changing the distribution of mass on the planet. This affects the Earth’s rotation, said Richard Gross, a geophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who uses a computer model to calculate the effects.

“The length of the day should have gotten shorter by 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second),” Gross, said today in an e-mailed reply to questions. “The axis about which the Earth’s mass is balanced should have moved by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters or 3 inches).”

In addition to causing widespread death and destruction, last week’s devastating earthquake in Chile may have shifted the Earth’s axis permanently and created shorter days, according to scientists at NASA. Based on calculations thus far, every day from now on should be 1.26 microseconds shorter. While the change probably won’t be affecting our daily schedules too much (a microsecond is a millionth of a second), it is unsettling to think about how much impact something as concentrated as an earthquake can have on the entire planet.

The death toll from Chile's devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit over the weekend could increase in coming days, President Michelle Bachelet said on Wednesday.

Bachelet told a local radio station more people than the some 800 now counted could have died in the temblor and tsunami waves that hit the coastline after the quake.

SANTIAGO, March 3 (Reuters)

A strong 5.9-magnitude aftershock offshore of the Chilean coast on Wednesday sparked panic in the southern-central town of Concepcion, devastated by a massive earthquake over the weekend.

Emergency officials said there was no risk of a tsunami hitting the area but scared residents fled to higher ground, according to Reuters witnesses.

The devastating quake on Saturday killed more than 800 people, but the death toll could rise in coming days, said President Michelle Bachelet.

Chile quake reconstruction 'to take up to four years'

_47414877_008888086-1.jpg
Chile is still assessing the enormous cost of the quake

Chile's reconstruction will take "three to four years" as the country recovers from the earthquake that killed some 800 people, its president has said.

"There are rural areas where everything has tumbled to the ground... infrastructure has been destroyed," Michelle Bachelet told Chilean radio.

It would take international aid and most of the next government's mandate to rebuild, Ms Bachelet added.
President-elect Sebastian Pinera is set to take over from her next week.

The cost of the damage, which Ms Bachelet described as "enormous", has so far been estimated at between $15bn and $30bn.

"Chile has the resources for a number of actions, but we will have to ask for credit from the World Bank and other entities," Ms Bachelet said.

Mr Pinera said his government would be one of reconstruction, with a plan of four clear stages - "to cope with the emergency needs of citizens, find people who are still missing, provide prompt and timely assistance to the sick and wounded, and restore law and order so that people can return to peace".

Chile sharply lowers quake death toll to 279

Thu Mar 4, 2010 11:18pm GMT

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chile's government on Thursday sharply cut the official death toll from a massive weekend earthquake and ensuing tsunamis to 279 identified bodies, from a previously reported 802 victims, without giving an explanation.

A government source told Reuters the previously reported figure had included lists of people still missing from various local authorities.

Strong earthquake rocks Chile, not related to 8.8 quake

Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 11:07 pm | BNO News
<!--BEGIN .entry-content-->
SANTIAGO, CHILE (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck near the Chilean city of Calama on Thursday, seismologists said. The earthquake was not an aftershock to Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated the country.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, struck about 39 miles east-northeast of Calama at a depth of 65 miles. A seismologist at the U.S. Geological Agency said the earthquake was not related to the 8.8-magnitude earthquake, saying it is "completely normal" for the region to experience such earthquakes.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from Thursday's earthquake.

CONCEPCION, Chile – Chile launched a hepatitis and tetanus vaccination campaign Friday and doctors warned of outbreaks of diarrhea and infection among thousands of people displaced by the earthquake and the tsunami that heavily damaged or destroyed 36 hospitals and made garbage dumps of coastal towns and cities.

With many pharmacies looted, people suffering from diabetes, hypertension and psychological illnesses are going without medicine.

Doctors report increasing cases of diarrhea among people drinking unclean water and worry that huge piles of garbage and tons of rotting fish and other debris along the coast have become nests of infection. A growing number of patients are getting injured as they wade through the mess.

Santiago, Chile (CNN) -- Chile marks three days of mourning starting Sunday, with every house authorized to hang the national flag in memory of those who perished in a massive earthquake a week ago.

Hundreds of people died when the 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck on February 27. It also triggered a tsunami that toppled buildings, particularly in the Maule region along the coast.

The death toll was lowered Thursday as authorities reviewed discrepancies in the reported number of victims in the Maule region.

To limit confusion, Deputy Interior Minister Patricio Rosende read aloud the names of 279 Chileans whose bodies had been identified by Thursday evening.

The new tally does not account for hundreds of unidentified victims.

"It takes months sometimes to compile the information, because one of the biggest problems in the affected areas is the lack of precision and uncertainty at the scene," Rosende said.

Experts: Quake moved Chile at least 10 feet

LOS ANGELES ? The massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Chile last month moved the entire city of Concepci?n ? the closest urban area to the quake's epicenter ? at least 10 feet west, U.S. researchers said Monday.

Shortly after the Feb. 27 temblor struck a swath of south-central Chile, killing more than 450 people, buckling bridges and downing buildings, earthquake scientists, many of them from the United States, immediately flocked to the region.

It also changed the speed at which the Earth spins, prompting NASA scientists to estimate that the day was shortened by a millionth of a second. It kicked up monster waves in the Pacific that destroyed whole towns.

Chile's capital, Santiago, moved about 11 inches to the west-southwest, while Buenos Aires, all the way across the continent from the quake site, moved about an inch to the west, the researchers said. The cities of Valparaiso and Mendoza, Argentina, both northeast of Concepci?n, also moved significantly.

The results were obtained from precise global-positioning-satellite (GPS) measurements taken before and after the quake, which occurred off the Maule coast of Chile, according to scientist Mike Bevis of Ohio State University. Since 1993, Bevis has headed the Central and Southern Andes GPS Project, designed to monitor crustal motion and deformation in the region.

The project has detected surface displacements as far away as the Falkland Islands and Fortaleza, Brazil. Bevis and others are in Chile to install more GPS units at sites whose previous locations are accurately known and to monitor continued movement along the fault.

The quake region is in the "ring of fire" that encircles the Pacific Ocean.

The February tremor occurred when the Nazca tectonic plate, which lies under much of the Pacific Ocean, was forced under the South American tectonic plate, a process known as subduction.

The lifting of the South American plate as it rode over the Nazca plate was responsible for the tidal wave that did considerable damage along the South American coast.

- The official death toll to date is 507.

- 80% of children are expected to begin classes in Santiago, but delays are expected elsewhere

- Several smaller towns and villages have yet to be reached (and the damage in indigenous communities is yet unknown) so some areas, particularly the region of Araucan?a may have significant damage.

Strongly felt quakes shake Chile inauguration

Associated Press
March 11, 2010 | 7:33 a.m.

SANTIAGO, Chile - The strongest aftershock since Chile's devastating earthquake rocked the South American country Thursday as President Sebastian Pinera was sworn into office.

The 7.2-magnitude aftershock was stronger than the quake that destroyed the Haitian capital on Jan. 12.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries but the temblor -- and at least three other aftershocks -- strongly swayed buildings -- shook windows and provoked nervous smiles among the dignitaries attending Pinera's inauguration at the congressional building in coastal Valparaiso.

The biggest aftershock happened along the same fault zone as Chile's magnitude-8.8 quake on Feb. 27, said geophysicist Don Blakeman at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado.

"When we get quakes in the 8 range, we would expect to see maybe a couple of aftershocks in the 7 range," he said.

Blakeman said Chile now can expect to feel "aftershocks of the aftershock."

"It's not a sign of anything different happening. But what does occur when you get these large aftershocks, typically we have a whole series of aftershocks again," Blakeman said.

Lima, Mar. 12 (ANDINA).- Peru?s field hospital in Concepcion has so far treated more than a thousand patients who were affected by the massive earthquake that hit several cities in Chile on February 27.

Peru's Health Ministry official Carlos Malpica said Friday that the fully-equipped field hospital has also performed twenty surgeries to date.

According to Malpica, the most common procedures performed were leg and ankle surgeries and cleaning of wounds.

The hospital also treated patients, particularly children and the elderly, with gastroenterocolitis and diarrhea.

The official said that the Peruvian team of health professionals was warmly welcomed by Concepcion residents, who thanked them for the support offered since the earthquake.
