Swine flu claims three lives

Chandigarh, Dec 18 (PTI) The H1N1 virus claimed lives of three persons, including two from Punjab, in the city today taking the death toll due to swine flu in the region to 32.

Harpal Singh from Ludhiana, Gurnam Singh from Bathinda and Vickey from Kaithal died in PGIMER here due to swine flu, city's swine flu nodal officer Dr G C Bansal said here.

He said that three positive cases, one each from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh were hospitalised today taking the number of such cases to 213.

Among the positive cases admitted to hospitals was a doctor of local government hospital, a resident of Mohali.

He said that with fall in minimum temperature, the trend of positive Swine flu cases has "increased", but the situation is not alarming.

Mohali: A 26-year-old resident of Phase VII died due to swine flu here today, taking the death toll to four.

According to reports, the patient was admitted to Fortis Hospital for the treatment of some other disease. But on suspicion, a sample was collected and the throat swab was sent to the PGI for tests, which were confirmed positive.

Earlier, two women and one two-month-old child had died due to swine flu here.

With one more resident succumbing to swine flu at Deepak Hospital in Ludhiana, the death toll has reached 10. Five of the 10 deceased were from Ludhiana while the others were from other districts of Punjab and were undergoing treatment here.

Sarabjit of Haibowal, who died last evening at Deepak Hospital, was admitted on December 14. She was put on therapeutic treatment by the district health authorities.

Civil Surgeon Maninderjit Singh said 78 swab samples had been sent from the city, out of which 32 tested positive for influenza H1N1. ?As many as 15 cases were from Ludhiana district,? he stated, adding that private hospitals had increased their bed strength and ventilators in order to accommodate maximum patients.

The health department today distributed 10,000 pamphlets and pasted posters pertaining to swine flu at crowded places, including railway station, bus stand and gurdwaras.

Jalandhar, Dec 20 (PTI) With death of a suspected flu patient in the Civil Hospital today, the toll due to H1N1 virus rose to 11 in the district.

Bipil Ahuja, a suspected swine flu patient was admitted to Civil Hospital and died even before getting the report of his swab test from PGI Chandigarh, Dr Roop Lal, District Health Officer of Civil Hospital told PTI here.

Meanwhile, Dr S P S Sohal, Director Health, Punjab Government today visited the civil hospital and inspected the arrangements made to treat the flu patients.

Talking to reporters, he said that apart from allowing Fortis Hospital and Dr Lal Laboratory for conducting test for H1N1 virus, a new laboratory in Amritsar Medical College would be soon established to test the swab for H1N1 virus.

Khanna, December 21
A 23-year-old boy residing in Samrala died today of swine flu in CMCH, Ludhiana.

The deceased has been identified as Amandeep Singh, who was working in a private telecom firm in the GTB market, Khanna, for the past some time.

As per relatives of the deceased, a close family member had come to meet him from England who might have been infected with H1N1 virus. He was suffering from fever for the past around one week and was rushed to a local hospital from where he was further referred to CMCH.

Earlier three persons have reportedly died of swine flu in Khanna.

Efforts are being made to make people aware of the virus by conducting meetings at various urban and rural areas of Khanna, besides sensitising private practitioners and others, said health department officials.

Amritsar, Dec 22 (PTI) One more death due to swine flu was reported here taking the tool due to the viral disease to two in the district, official sources said today.

The deceased was identified as Dharmvir Singh (37), resident of Tarn Taran who died on December 16 was tested positive for swine flu.

Dr H S Ghai incharge of the swine flue ward of civil hospital said that reports of Dharmvir were received here today.

Ghai said that Dharmvir was presently employed with the Indian army on non commissioned rank, posted at Pune and was here on leave.

Earlier on December 18, Surjit Kaur (65) resident of Chabba village had died after being tested positive for H1N1 virus.

Jalandhar, Dec 23 (PTI) With death of a swine flu patient today, the toll due to H1N1 virus today rose to 12 in the district.

Tarlochan Singh, a resident of Goindwal Sahib, who was admitted to Civil Hospital on December 18 and tested positive for H1N1 virus, today died, Dr Roop Lal, District Health Officer of Civil Hospital told PTI adding at present there were 11 including a H1N1 patient admitted to the hospital.

While two of the H1N1 positive patients have already been discharged after their treatment, swabs of other suspected patients were sent for tests to PGI, Chandigarh and reports were still awaited, DHO added.

Meanwhile, medical teams were kept on high alert to control the spread of the virus and extra care was being taken of those patients, who were having symptoms of H1N1 virus, he added.

A swine flu positive patient from Gidderbaha (Muktsar) Sharanjit Kaur (30), who was admitted for the past some days in the Adesh Medical College, Bathinda, today died after delivering a dead baby this afternoon. She was pregnant for seven months.

This is the second death in Muktsar district with swine flu. Earlier, on December 21 Jaswinder Kaur (29) from Doda village (Gidderbaha), 12 km from Muktsar, had died with swine flu. Jaswinder had died 10 days after delivering a baby while Sharanjit died after delivering a dead baby on the same day.

Talking to The Tribune the district health officer (DHO) Dr Dharampal Singh Sekhon said this evening that after the delivery of seven-month baby, the condition of Sharanjit Kaur started deteriorating due to certain complications and she died.

One more case from Bathinda has been tested positive for swine flu. He is Nitin Singla (24), a resident of Rampuraphul who runs a cloth shop at Bathinda. His test's report was received by the district health authorities here last night from the PGI, Chandigarh, where Nitin is admitted and under treatment.

Dr Sekhon said they had also received the test report a local MBBS doctor, whose samples had been sent for swine flu test to the PGI the previous day. As per the report, the doctor tested negative for swine flu. He was admitted in an isolation ward of the local civil hospital the previous day, but as he had been tested negative, he had been discharged from the hospital today. However, he had been advised to take preventive measures, the DHO added.

Dr Sekhon further said the result of the sample of another suspected swine flu patient Lakhbir Singh was still awaited though his sample had also been sent with doctor's sample the previous day.

To create awareness about swine flu among the masses a drama team today staged a play at two places in the city.

The team staged a show in the local civil hospital while the other show was performed at Vardhman colony. Through the play, the artists educated and informed the masses about the symptoms of swine flu and the preventive measures to check the swine flu menace.

Chandigarh, Dec 24 (PTI) Swine flu today claimed the life of a person in the city, taking the pandemic toll in the region to 41.

Asha Devi of Himachal Pradesh succumbed to the virus in a city hospital, a health official here said.

Meanwhile, six more positive swine flu cases were registered here taking the number of such patients to 305.

Two girls, one aged two and a half years and the other in her teens, died of swine flu yesterday in Faridkot district of Punjab which has reported a total of 26 deaths so far due to the deadly disease.

Five positive cases were also registered in Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Bathinda taking the total number of such patients to 157 in Punjab.

Meanwhile, two other patients, who were confirmed of swine flu, and another suspected one from this district are still under treatment. A resident of Badali died of swine flu at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

The victim was identified as Lakhvinder Singh. Relatives of Lakhvinder said he had gone to see a patient admitted in Sector 32 hospital on Friday and complained of fever and vomiting.

He was admitted in the hospital and it was found that he was suffering from swine flu. He died next day in the hospital.

Doctors at Kharar Civil Hospital said close relatives and friends of Lakhvinder would be given medicines for swine flu.

Chandigarh: One more student of St Stephen?s tested positive for swine flu today, raising the total positive cases so far to 312.

According to UT nodal officer for swine flu, HC Gera, ?After a class VI student of St Stephen?s tested positive, their family members has been home quarantined at their residence in Sector 46.?

FEROZEPUR: A pregnant woman Gagandeep Kaur suffering from swine flu died in a Ludhiana hospital on Sunday evening. Meanwhile Two suspected swine flu patients, including a woman doctor posted in the local civil hospital, were admitted to the isolation ward in the civil hospital in Bathinda on Sunday.

Baldev Raj Arora, Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Civil Hospital, when contacted, while confirming the death of Gagandeep Kaur due to swine flu, said that details in connection with the same would be available tomorrow.

Two suspected swine flu patients, including a woman doctor posted in the local civil hospital nowadays, were admitted to the isolation ward in the civil hospital in Bathinda on Sunday.

The throat samples of both patients were taken by the hospital authorities today to send the same for swine flu test to the PGI, Chandigarh. Both samples will be sent to the PGI tomorrow morning.

District health officer (DHO) Dr Dharampal Singh Sekhon said that 27-year-old Dr Shilpa, who was actually posted at Bhucho Mandi but nowadays posted in the local civil hospital on deputation, had been admitted to the civil hospital here as a suspected swine flu case.

Besides Dr Shipa, the other suspected swine flu patient was a 17-year-old girl who had also been admitted to the hospital on Sunday. She was daughter of another swine flu positive patient Charanjit Kaur from Bathinda who was also under treatment at the civil hospital here, the DHO added.

He said the health authorities were now keeping a vigil in the entire district to check the menace of swine flu disease in an effective manner and detect the suspected swine flu cases at early stage.

Dr Sekhon said the district health authorities had also been creating awareness among the masses by way of adopting several measures, including distribution of pamphlets and stage shows of a drama.

Besides, the doctors were also educating the people about the symptoms of the swine flu disease in the district, he added.

FEROZEPUR: Close on the basis of two deaths due to Swine flu in the last 48 hours, the dreaded H1N1 virus claimed another life in Ferozepur.

Balbir Singh who had been getting treatment in a local private hospital since December 24 died late on Monday night. Earlier, Harjit Singh and Gagandeep Kaur, had died of the disease.

Information gathered by TNS revealed that Balbir Singh was only 45 years old and was a resident of Shirianwala village in Jalalabad area of this district. Though he was given the best treatment, he could not survive. Gagandeep Kaur, who died suspectedly due to swine flu in a Ludhiana hospital yesterday, also belonged to Shirianwala village.

Ramesh Kumar Sikri, District Health Officer (DHO), when contacted, said that about 73 persons including 65 adults and eight children, who were in contact with the deceased Balbir Singh and Gagandeep Kaur, had been given treatment so that they could be saved from the disease.

He pointed out that so far, five persons identified as Desh Deepak, Varinder, Soma Rani, Disha Surjeet Singh and Moksh, who were positive cases of swine flu, had been treated. He added that swine flu cases had been reported from Abohar, Fazilka and Jalalabad sub-divisions of the district.

The deceased were identified as Paramjit Singh, Paramjit Kaur and Vidya Devi -- all from Punjab, Dr Roop Lal, District Health Officer (DHO) told PTI.

He said while two of the suspected patients were admitted late last night the third was in the isolation ward since yesterday.

The swab samples of all of three patients were sent for test to PGI Chandigarh and reports were awaited, Lal said.

He said so far the death toll due to H1N1 in the district is 17, including the three deaths.

He fell ill on December 31 and was first admitted to local civil hospital, then shifted to Jalandhar Hospital, from where doctors reffered him to PGI Chandigarh and he breathed his last on Friday night.

Panic grips Gurdaspur as H1N1 toll reaches up to four

Four deaths officially declared to be caused by swine flu in Gurdaspur district has created panic. While health officials state that the situation is still under control, the residents of district are getting more scared after the death of a journalist by swine flu.

Panic gripped Dera Baba Nanak town 30 km from here and situated near Indo-Pak border after official reports confirmed that Bhagwan Das, 45, a journalist, died due to swine flu and unconfirmed reports suggesting his son admitted in a private hospital was infected with H1N1.

A team of medicos of the Gurdaspur civil hospital along with local staff of the civil hospital launched a drive on Thursday to check whether more patients had symptoms of the disease.

While Bhagwan Das died in an Amritsar hospital on February 10, 2010 of suspected swine flu, the Gurdaspur Civil hospital authorities here confirmed on Thursday that he died of H1N1 as stated by the laboratory reports.

Dr Ram Lal, District Health Officer, while talking to The Pioneer said the health department reports confirmed that Das died of swine flu. Terming the scare of the disease in the town as rumours, Dr Lal said Das?s son was admitted in the hospital due to eye affliction, while his medical tests were conducted to check whether he had the symptoms of the disease.

Earlier, a resident of Patel Chowk in Pathankot, Mandeep Singh had died of swine flu in a private hospital in Ludhiana.

LUDHIANA: Over 141 fresh cases of H1N1 has set alarm bells ringing in the health department. Doctors here have denied using HIN1 vaccines allotted to medical and paramedical staff for use during spread of swine flu virus.

According to sources, 20,000 doses of H1N1 vaccines were supplied to the state in March and central government had sent guidelines for first phase that included vaccines for medical staff. Initiative has been taken to save more vulnerable people from the infection.
However, 180 positive cases of H1N1 have been detected in the city and health department is suggesting humidity as another possible cause for triggering the infection.

Talking to TOI state nodal officer of National Integrated Surveillance department,Dr Deepak Bhatia said, it is true that doctors are refusing to use this vaccine as they feel that spread of infection has come to an end. He added that surveillance department has written to all the civil surgeons and and sent a detailed report of 168 cases detected in Karnataka, Kerala and Maharasthra.

A 40-year-old man from the Mansa has been admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital after he tested positive for swine flu. Blood samples would be sent on Tuesday which would confirm the report
