Suspected H1N1 patient dies in Rajkot
19 November 2009, 09:48pm IST
RAJKOT/JAMNAGAR: A suspected H1N1 patient died on Wednesday at Rajkot Civil Hospital, which has so far registered five deaths due to swine flu. Also in Jamnagar, a 19-year-old woman tested positive for swine flu after she was admitted to GG Hospital on Wednesday.

According to hospital officials, Samir Diwan (18) succumbed to high fever. His report on throat swab sample is awaited.

"Samir, a native of Than, was down with fever at his uncle's place in Morbi. As there was no improvement in his condition, he was shifted to civil hospital here. We collected samples of his throat swab, sputum and blood and sent them to Ahmedabad's civil hospital for testing. However, before the test report could arrive, the patient succumbed after five hours of treatment," a hospital official said.

One more swine flu suspect Arti Mandan (2) from Shastrinagar Society in Gandhigram area was shifted to Rajkot Civil Hospital. "As Arti was running high fever since past few days, we shifted her to the isolation ward and collected her throat swab samples," the official said. The condition of another swine flu patient Dharmishta (14) deteriorated and she was put on ventilator.

Meanwhile, the positive report of swine flu suspect from Patel Colony area in Jamnagar has caused widespread panic among the staff of GG Hospital, including doctors and nurses, who volunteered their throat swab samples for testing.

"The testing could not be carried out. Instead, we have provided them with Tamiflu tablets as a preventive measure," said a hospital official.

Of the swine flu suspects, the hospital admitted a 13-year-old boy from Manavadar, who was suffering from fever and chronic cough. "The boy has been quarantined for obvious reasons. We've collected his throat swabs and sent them to Ahmedabad for testing, the report of which is awaited," the official said.

47th death due to swine flu in state

AHMEDABAD: Laxmikumar Premkumar Goswami, a 20-year-old woman from Palanpur in Deesa succumbed to swine flu at Civil Hospital on Wednesday. Goswami is 47th victim of H1N1 in the state.
Doctors at the Civil Hospital said that Goswami had developed symptoms of swine flu including high fever and breathlessness. She was prescribed Tamiflu but her condition deteriorated.

Goswami's death has raised concerns over the many devotees who had come to Unjha during the Maa Umiya temple celebrations. More than 2,000 NRIs' had congregated, besides the 45 lakh visitors who had come to the venue from various parts of the country and state in the last five days. Though temple authorities had installed H1N1 scanning centres, the number of suspected cases that were isolated is yet not being revealed by the state government.

So far, 322 positive cases of swine flu have been detected. Meanwhile, three new cases of swine flu were detected on Wednesday which included a seven-year-old girl. One patient has been admitted in Wockhardt Hospital in Rajkot while the other in Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad.

Government claims that the spread of swine flu has remained fairly contained during of winter. With winter setting in, people need to take more precautions and promptly consult designated swine flu centres if the common viral fever symptoms or cough does not subside.

New Delhi: Six swine flu deaths, three of them in Rajasthan alone, were reported Friday, taking the toll from influenza A (H1N1) virus in India to 606, health authorities said here.

Also, a record 290 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious flu to 19,162.

With the three deaths, the toll in Rajasthan has gone up to 57. Two deaths were also reported from the national capital, taking the total toll in the Indian capital to 28.

One death was reported from Gujarat, taking the number of deaths due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus in the state to 47.

Meanwhile, Delhi reported 186 cases of swine flu Friday -- the highest for a single day - taking the number of people affected with the virus to 5,603. The national capital Thursday reported 176 cases of swine flu.

The number of people affected with the virus in Delhi is now the highest in the country.

Swine flu claims three more in city
TNN 6 December 2009, 05:31am IST

AHMEDABAD: Four people died of swine flu in the city on Saturday. Three of the victims were from Gujarat, which includes a young pregnant mother, while one case was from Rajasthan. The patients had come to Civil Hospital in the last three days. The official state death figure stands at 48 till now and 333 people have been tested positive.

The three who died in Civil Hospital were Makshree Bhojraj, 21, a pregnant lady from Mundra in Kutch, Virja Ramesh, 35, from Botad and Govind Raval, 27, from Palanpur. The three had acute lower respiratory tract infections.

Three of the four new patients who were tested positive in the last two days in the state had refused to stay in hospitals in Rajkot, Palanpur and Vadodara and come to Civil Hospital. What has surprised medical officials is that these H1N1 positive patients had come in contact with more people while coming to Ahmedabad.

Winters have been a concern for health authorities for a long time and it is the second onslaught of H1N1 virus that authorities are worried about. With marriage season and the influx of NRIs into the state, officials have already pressed the alarm button.

In Ahmedabad a large number of swine flu victims -- 83% detected since July 11 -- were between 13 and 45 years. As many as 112 people tested positive in various parts of the city while the city recorded its maximum cases in the posh new west zone.

Close to a 1,000 people were put under surveillance and were administered Tamiflu in various cases where they came in contact with swine flu patients. The city on the whole has recorded eight deaths within municipal limit while eight died outside the limits or belonged to neighbouring towns and districts.

Two-year-old succumbs to swine flu, toll rises to 51
TNN 12 December 2009, 01:08am IST
AHMEDABAD: A two-year-old boy succumbed to swine flu on Friday taking the death toll in Gujarat due to H1N1 virus to 51. In addition to this, five patients were brought to Gujarat for critical healthcare from Rajasthan.

Experts feared that more people could be affected as winter has set in even as four more patients were diagnosed as swine flu positive. Doctors said there are two significant changes in protocol which should be followed to ensure that swine flu patients with complications are able to come around.

Infectious diseases specialist Dr Atul Patel, who was part of the team that treated Chief Minister Narendra Modi for swine flu, said updated treatment guidelines for H1N1 influenza from World Health Organization (WHO) urge clinicians to administer anti-viral medications as soon as possible to patients at-risk groups with flu symptoms, patients with pneumonia, and those with uncomplicated influenza-like illness that worsens or fails to improve within 72 hours. Experts also said that doctors should double the dosage of Tamiflu if the patients lungs were affected.

Patients, who fall in the risk group include pregnant women, children younger than two years and individuals with chronic illnesses like diabetes and respiratory problems.

"Earlier the WHO guidelines focussed on treating severe disease resulting from the H1N1 virus. The updated guidelines are more focussed on preventing the severe disease. One definitely is not required to wait for testing the patient for swine flu. If the clinic judgement says that the patient may be having H1N1, it is better to start anti-viral therapy than to miss the golden period of recovery", says Dr Patel, also consultant at Sterling Hospital.

Dr Urman Dhruv, who is a consultant physician at Medisurge Hospital, said while most of the patients with mild symptoms may get well on their own, one should definitely not delay giving anti-virals to patients, who fall in the high risk group or where lower respiratory tract is infected.

In case of lung involvement, dosage of Tamiflu should be doubled. "In cases where patients have developed symptoms where their lungs are affected and have developed breathlessness, the one-time dose of Tamiflu which is 75 mg should be doubled to 150 mg. This helps in treating patients with complications better", says Dr Patel.

Three more swine flu deaths in Ahmedabad, state toll 63
DNASaturday, December 19, 2009 10:38 IST

Ahmedabad: The death toll is rising as far as swine flu is concerned. The H1N1 influenza claimed four more lives in the state on Friday, taking the total death toll to 63. Moreover, 17 new positive cases of the disease were also reported from the state.

Of the four deaths on Friday, three were reported from Ahmedabad while one was from Rajkot. Of the four deaths in Ahmedabad, one of the deceased was from Rajasthan and had come to the city for treatment. So far six people from Rajasthan who had come to Ahmedabad for swine flu treatment have died.
If one were to take their numbers into account the total toll in Gujarat goes up to 69. With winter getting severe, more cases of the disease are being reported every day. This has added to the fear of an increase in the spread of the disease.

According to sources in the health department at present, the health officials are concentrating on providing medicines and other necessary treatment.

They say that government efforts notwithstanding, the people will have to be more proactive in helping prevent the disease. Principal health secretary, Rajesh Kishore told DNA"We are on high alert to deal with the situation but the citizens should also be more careful about prevention and even while choosing a hospital." Kishore said in most cases the patient often visits a hospital when he is in the last stages of the disease. "This makes it very difficult for doctors to save them," said Kishore.

When asked if mass public gatherings like the Kankaria carnival could aggravate the spread of the disease, he said that such gatherings did not pose any health risk if adequate safety measures are taken.

Sources in the health department said they were not sure if the Kankaria Carnival will be called of due to the rising incidence of swine flu.

Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat and Bhuj have reported swine flu deaths in the last many days.

Swine flu

AHMEDABAD: Swine flu claimed nine lives in two days in Gujarat as two more people succumbed to H1N1 virus in hospitals across the state on Tuesday with the total death toll climbing to 73. [presumably not counting Rajasthan natives who died in Gujarat]

On Monday, seven people had succumbed to swine flu. On Tuesday, the H1N1 virus claimed two more lives as Kaushal Gupta, 69, died in Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad while Ramlal Mavadia, 76, succumbed in GG Civil Hospital in Jamnagar. At least three more people died on Tuesday due to suspected swine flu but their test results are yet to be ascertained.

The high number of deaths has sent alarm bells ringing as health officials urged private medical practitioners to follow renewed World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines and administer Tamiflu to suspected swine flu patients in the initial days of symptoms to avoid complications.

In Gujarat, it has been noticed that most patients who died in public hospitals were being treated for viral infections and pneumonia and brought for swine flu treatment when severe complications had set in. ?It is important that private doctors take up the challenge of simple management of flu patients. Many patients are first treated for simple fever even pneumonia delaying H1N1 treatment which can prove fatal for patients. If doctors suspect that patient may have swine flu, they should start Tamiflu, said health secretary Rajesh Kishore who said swine flu was expected to worsen in winter. While a surge in swine flu was expected in winter season, public congregations like Unjha fair, the IIM festival and the forthcoming Kankaria Carnival are feared to expose more people to the virus.

While the government had installed thermal scanners at Navratri and Ambaji festivity venues, it curiously will not be scanning lakhs of people who will throng Kankaria. ?Six medical team with eight doctors will be put to monitor swine flu. The check-ups will be voluntary and not mandatory for visitors,? said AMC medical health officer Suhas Kulkarni.

Meanwhile, infectious diseases specialist Dr Atul Patel said most doctors in other districts are not even aware that Tamiflu is now available in their region on prescription. ?More awareness needs to be created. Also government might think of importing vaccines which will help stem the onslaught of swine flu,? said Dr Patel.
