FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13 - July 31

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Am I reading this wrong or is WHO now recommending that only "clusters of deaths" be reported?

H1N1 Pandemic Spreading Too Fast to Count: WHO

http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116157

If that's the new policy then this fatality count is going to get shut down from lack of information just like the confirmed case counts have.

I think the states are going to still report deaths - how else will they be able to tell if there's a severe cluster?

(And what constitutes a cluster? 2? 5? 10? 20?)

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

are there any laws requiring states to report fatalities in a pandemic? I guess the WHO policies would apply to national health agencies like the CDC, which hasn't really been reporting deaths accurately anyway.

The problem is that most journalists who write H1N1 articles quote CDC statistics. No statistics = no deaths.

This entire new attitude from WHO concerns me greatly. I really think they meant to say clusters of infections, severe cases OR fatalities, but that is not what they said. I was already concerned when they didn't post new numbers on the 10th or 13th.

There is more I could go on to say than most of you want to hear....

None of my friends or family realize that the number of US deaths are approaching 300 or that over 750 people have died around the world.

Little media attention coupled with "underlying conditions" has left most people with the impression that H1N1 is a non event.

is the highlighting easier to follow?

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Yes, the highlighting is helpful, thanks!

I keep wondering when OUR first wave will be winding down. I guess deaths are a lagging indicator because of the potentially long duration of hospitalization.

Or maybe the US is large enough that there will be no discrete wave for the whole country, just a series of overlapping waves of infection that may be sorted out only at the community level.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Highlighting is cool!

Re: California, here's a list broken by county from their website. The new deaths for each county are in parentheses - I compared the numbers to appleblossom's last detailed list on the previous page (post #89)

Alameda 5 (1)
Contra Costa 5
Los Angeles 7 (4)
Marin 1
Monterey 1
Orange 8 (3)
Placer 1 (1)
Riverside 1 (1)
Sacramento 2
San Bernardino 1
San Diego 8 (1)
San Francisco 2 (1)
San Mateo 6 (2)
Santa Clara 2 (1)
Santa Cruz 1
Solano 1
Sonoma 2 (1)
Stanislaus 1

Hope my math is right....the first column should add to 55, the parentheses numbers should add up to 16 (55 - 39 = 16).

Is anyone keeping a list of how many we are getting per day? I could start doing that, so that we could see how many increases or decreases we get perday. We may be able to predict how many we get in certain days and be "prepared for a busy day or so.

Looks like Massachusetts #6 can be removed - he didn't have the flu after all

Man, 64, did not die from the swine flu

By Aaron Nicodemus TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER ? A 64-year-old Worcester resident who died last week did not have swine flu, contradicting previous reports from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Derek S. Brindisi, the city?s acting director of public health, said a series of tests has found that the man did not die of swine flu, or any other type of influenza.

?According to the state, the rapid test provided a false positive for influenza,? he said today. ?The follow-up test came back negative for influenza.?

The state DPH had announced that the man?s death was linked to H1N1 (swine flu), pending confirmation from the Hinton State Laboratory Institute.

Mr. Brindisi said the man had ?severe underlying medical issues,? but said he had no more information about what caused his death.

Worcester?s first confirmed swine flu death, a 13-year-old boy who died on June 8, is now the city?s only death linked to swine flu. Four other victims, from age 30 to 84, were all Boston residents.
