Mount Redoubt is erupting!

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! 11:05PM Alaska time

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! 11:05PM Alaska time

those seismographs have been getting worse all night - had to happen soon.

The seismographs are solid ink!

Unfortunately, the wind trajectory is carrying the ash toward Anchorage and the other most populated area in the state - the Mat-Su valley.

I like a little north - just under the TKA below the 150.

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! 11:05PM Alaska time

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! 11:05PM Alaska time

A check of airport traffic at 11:25 Pm, shows

2 flights from Hawaii due in at 4 AM and 5AM - remember they're currently flying over a big ocean.

1 flight from New York, due in at 3:12 AM.

1 flight from Phoenix, due in at 1:05 AM.

1 from Portland, another from Salt Lake, and 2 from Seattle, all due shortly - just before midnight.

1 more from Seattle, due at 2:30 AM.

Flight arr/dep info doesn't go futher.

Then there's all the heavy traffic tomorrow and this list doesn't include the overnight cargo refueling stops from China, the FedEx planes, and UPS - we have big sorting centers at the airport.

I would venture that all of the above flights are currently over the ocean, since flight time from Seattle (last airport available) is 4 hours.

See what one volcano can impact?

Mount Redoubt is erupting; flights diverted, ash fall advisory issued for Susitna Valley
Updated: March 23, 2009 12:23 AM

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Mount Redoubt is erupting, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.

The eruption began at approximately 10:38 p.m., AVO said. An eruption cloud is estimated to be at 50,000 feet above sea level at present.

The Air Force says the ash cloud is expected to reach Anchorage by 2 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued an ash fall advisory for the cities of Talkeetna, Willow and Cantwell, effective until 4 a.m. Monday. Ash fall is expected to be light.

A flash flood warning has been issued for the Drift River near Mount Redoubt.

At 9:32 p.m., AVO issued an update stating that seismicity at Redoubt had increased significantly. At 11:02 p.m. it issued a release saying the eruption had begun.

AVO raised the aviation alert level to Red and will send out more information as it interprets the data.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport remains open as of midnight.

Alaska Airlines has rerouted five flights bound for Anchorage -- two out of Seattle and one each out of Honolulu, Maui and Nome.

All airline passengers should check with their carrier for possible cancellations and delays.

Unrest at Redoubt began about six weeks ago with increased seismicity. AVO raised the alert level to orange, and it stayed there until about 10 days ago after a period of relative calm.

The alert level was briefly elevated back to orange after a minor eruption of steam that did not produce significant ash fall.

It was lowered back to yellow late Saturday evening when earthquake activity increased significantly, culminating in Sunday's eruption.

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

There is now a 4th eruption which started at 1:39AM and is ongoing. The furtherest seismograph is red-lining it for long enough to match the big eruption at 11:04AM.

http://www.avo.alaska.edu/webicorders/Redoubt/NCT_EHZ_AV.php

The good news is that none of the eruptions have been large enough to disable any seismographs.

The 4th eruption has done a "wrap-around" on the seismogrph - it's now lasted 43 minutes and counting.

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

Thanks for all the updates.

Here are a couple of snips from Yahoo news

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted four times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles high into the air, but the state's largest city has likely been spared from any ashfall.

"The ash cloud went to 50,000 feet, and it's currently drifting toward the north, northeast," said Janet Schaefer, a geologist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Increased earthquake activity over the past 48 hours prompted scientists to raise the alert level for Mount Redoubt on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, 40 to 50 earthquakes were being recorded every hour.

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

The ash is supposedly headed straight toward my community, but I haven't seen, felt, or smelled any yet.

The whole area has light snow in the forecast over the next few days, so some ash may get deposited as dirty snow.

I've set out a bulk collection container and will send in samples per AVO instructions.

The Redoubt photos taken before the eruption )over the last couple of days) were SO beautiful. I especially enjoyed the giant cracks in the glaciers on top - such a beautiful clean blue. :D It's hard to imagine how quickly that can all change.

The ash will be arriving at the end of winter, so it will absorb solar heat all summer. Just one more thing melting glaciers.

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

Re: Mount Redoubt is erupting! started 10:38 local time

An increase in activity at about 2:53AM might be called a 5th eruption.

Mount Redoubt erupts for a 4th time in 3 hours; ash fall reported in Skwentna
Updated: March 23, 2009 03:37 AM

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Mount Redoubt erupted four times three hours late Sunday and early Monday, and the Alaska Volcano Observatory says the most recent was the largest so far.

"Beginning at 10:38 p.m. (Sunday) night, we began to have explosive activity," geophysicist John Power with the United States Geological Survey said. "At this point we have recorded four separate explosive events.

"These events were very large, explosive eruptions of Redoubt Volcano."

An eruption cloud is estimated to be at 50,000 feet above sea level at present.

The National Weather Service has issued an ash fall advisory for the cities of Talkeetna, Willow and Cantwell, effective until 8 a.m. Monday. Ash fall has been reported in Skwentna, and AVO says ash is still being emitted from the volcano.

Predictions before the most recent eruption called for light ash fall and for it to miss Anchorage, but things can change rapidly.

A flash flood warning has been issued for the Drift River near Mount Redoubt.

A Chevron oil terminal at Drift River just 27 miles from the volcano has initiated shutdown procedures to "both protect the health and safety of its employees and contractors and to safeguard the environment against a possible spill from its crude storage operations at its facility," Cook Inlet Pipe Line Co. said in a press release.

Elmendorf Air Force Base said early Monday that only "essential personnel" should report to work, and to contact supervisors for more information.

"What we've seen at Redoubt over the last two days is a very marked buildup in earthquake activity, earthquakes centered directly beneath the summit of the volcano," Power said.

The first explosion occurred at 10:38 p.m., a second at 11:02 p.m., a third at 12:14 a.m. and the most recent event at 1:39 a.m.

At 9:32 p.m., AVO issued an update stating that seismicity at Redoubt had increased significantly. At 11:02 p.m. it issued a release saying the eruption had begun.

AVO raised the aviation alert level to Red and will send out more information as it interprets the data.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport remains open as of 2:45 a.m.

Alaska Airlines has rerouted five flights bound for Anchorage -- two out of Seattle and one each out of Honolulu, Maui and Nome.

Continental Airlines had passengers board a plane in Anchorage then had them disembark, delaying the flight until 10 a.m.

U.S. Airways has turned one inbound flight back.

All airline passengers should check with their carrier for possible cancellations and delays.

Every Home Depot in Anchorage and the Mat-Su will be open 24 hours a day until further notice. A representative with the company says it is well-stocked with emergency supplies. There were about 20 people in line at the Tudor Road store at 2:20 a.m.

Decisions on school closures, if any, will likely not be made until around 4 a.m. Again, KTUU.com will send out bulletins as warranted.

The history of Redoubt suggests that this is only the beginning.

"Based on Redoubt's past eruptive behavior we might expect this particular eruptive episode to persist for some period of time," Power said. "The most recent eruption of Redoubt went on intermittently for a period of five months."

Elevated unrest at Redoubt began about six weeks ago with increased seismicity. AVO raised the alert level to orange, and it stayed there until about 10 days ago after a period of relative calm.

"This activity is something we've been expecting to see at Redoubt," Power said. "We first began tracking unrest at Redoubt in July of 2008. On November 5th we moved up our aviation alert to yellow, January 25th as activity escalated further we moved up to orange."

It was lowered back to yellow, but late Saturday evening it returned to orange when earthquake activity increased significantly, culminating in Sunday's eruption.

Alaska Airlines Cancels Alaska Flights As Result Of Mt. Redoubt Volcanic Ash
Posted: 03/23/2009 03:55:05 AM AKDT

SEATTLE - Alaska Airlines announced it has canceled 19 flights destined to Anchorage and flights out of Anchorage to Bethel, Deadhorse, Kodiak, Nome, Kotzebue, and Barrow. The flights were canceled as a safety precaution related to the pattern of ash at altitude created by the eruption of Mt. Redoubt volcano near Anchorage, Alaska.

As of 4:30 a.m. Pacific time, 19 flights were canceled. The airline is monitoring the ash pattern on a continuous basis and hopes to resume flights later when it is safe to do so.

Travelers are advised to check the status of flights at alaskaair.com or call 1-800-ALASKAAIR. Specific information about making changes to flight itineraries due to these cancellations is available at alaskaair.com.

"We recognize these cancellations will significantly impact our customers intending to travel to or from Alaska," said Ben Minicucci, chief operating officer and vice president of operations. "These decisions are guided by our commitment to safety, and we are making every effort to re-accommodate passengers whose flight schedules have been disrupted."

Volcanic ash poses significant safety concerns to aircraft both on the ground and in the air as it limits visibility and damages engines. Precautions and continuity plans were put in place as early as January 2009 in the event of a volcanic eruption. Aircraft in Anchorage has been serviced and wrapped in protective sealant. In addition, safety masks, goggles and other supplies are on-hand to protect customers and employees from volcanic ash.

Alaska Airlines operates up to 50 flights a day in to Anchorage and two flights a day to Kodiak, Alaska.

Travelers are advised to check the status of flights at alaskaair.com or 800-ALASKAAIR. Specific information about making changes to flight itineraries due to these cancellations is available at alaskaair.com.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK), together serve more than 90 cities through an expansive network in Alaska, the Lower 48, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Alaska Airlines ranked "Highest in Customer Satisfaction among Traditional Network Carriers (tie)" in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 North America Airline Satisfaction StudySM.

Eruption # 5 (or 6 if you counted another smaller one) started at about 4:30:20 AM.

And it's big enough to "red-line".

It will be light by 7 AM local time ( 2 hours from now) - the webcams may have some interesting pictures.

Another explosion at 4:56, then 4:59...

Now the question is, how many months before we have a lower frequency of eruptions?

Also, what will be the impact on varous industries - Cook Inlet oil products production, cargo, tourism, coal, etc.
