Nursery infection outbreak
Saturday, 03 May 2008

The Centre of Disease Prevention and Control of Health Services was notified yesterday of a virus outbreak at a nursery school.
Since April 26, the children of Tung Sin Tong II, located at Rua de Entre-Fields has reported a total of seven cases of a virus that principally affects the hand, feet and mouth, of which five children are in the same class.
The children didn't require hospitalisation, however all required medical attention. There were also no cases of abnormal symptoms or nervous system infections or serious complications. The Centre of Disease Control and Prevention is currently collecting the samples of children to confirm the source pathogenic through laboratory tests.
The Sanitary Authority carried out an inspection of the school and guided the nursery in infection control measures, cleaning and disinfection. In addition, it ordered a suspension for a period of seven days the class which had experienced the most cases in order to prevent further infections.
The enterovirus infection can appear during the entire year and worldwide, with a peak in summer.
In principle, the disease of the hands, feet and mouth affects children under five years.
The incubation period varies from three to seven days and is transmitted through direct contact with infected by droplets of saliva and the contaminated materials.
Because of the close contact of children in nurseries and kindergartens it is easy for an outbreak of hands, feet and the mouth to occur.
In the initial period symptoms such as fever, sore throat, blisters or a rash on the hands, feet and buttocks. During the period of seven to ten days the blisters and rash will gradually disappear and the patient should not experience further problems.
The Health Services has called for citizens particularly pupils and parents, particularly in the absence of any effective vaccine against the enterovirus, to implement the following measures to prevent infection:
Pay attention to personal hygiene, particularly washing hands before meals, after using the toilet, after handling diapers for children or dirty objects; cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing; adopting precautionary measures in the handling of secretions from mouth and nose and avoid crowds and places of little ventilation.
If symptoms occur such as fever or outbreaks of hands, feet and mouth occur a doctor should be called immediately.

Four more cases of hand-foot-mouth disease
Tuesday, 06 May 2008

Another four children from Tung Sin Tong II kindergarten were diagnosed with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), thee of which belonged to the same class that had already been suspended.
According to a statement released yesterday by the Health Bureau, a total of 11 children in Macau have been diagnosed with the disease.
Although the stage of the disease is not considered severe, parents still rushed their children to the hospital for medical attention, the statement said.
?There have been no cases of [children who need] hospitalisation, or who have had suffered from abnormal symptoms in the nervous system,? it added.
However, the samples collected from the four other children are still being tested, and the kindergarten has taken precautionary measures to disinfect the area where these children had class.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health warned HFMD ?will possibly increase in the following months since June and July are the peak seasons for the disease.?
Following the 22 children's deaths reportedly caused by enterovirus 71, or EV71, in Fuyang of Anhui province, two other deaths from the same virus have been confirmed in Guangdong province, Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday.
China Daily yesterday reporter that by Friday last week, 4,529 HFMD cases had been reported in Anhui, including 3,736 cases in worst-hit Fuyang, the provincial health authority said yesterday. Of those in Fuyang, 22 have died and 12 are in critical condition, with more than 600 still in hospital. Some have damaged brains, hearts and lungs.
Several hundred cases have emerged in other places including Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces as well as the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.
EV71 has been confirmed to have caused some of the cases, Xinhua reported.
The Ministry of Health said on its website that "HFMD is highly preventable and can be treated".
However, there is no effective vaccine available worldwide to kill the EV71 and "current medical intervention targets the complications from the viral infection", China Daily quoted Liu Xiaolin, a leading doctor in Fuyang as saying.

Macao records 79 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-07 21:22:56

MACAO, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Some 79 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) have been detected by far in Macao, four of which were confirmed as enterovirus 71 (EV71) infections, local health authorities announced Wednesday.

The most severe outbreak of the disease occurred at a local crche, with 14 pupils diagnosed with HFMD, and the faecal samples from four of these young patients tested positive for the highly contagious EV71 virus, according to a press statement released by the Disease Preventive and Control Center of Macao's Health Bureau (SSM).

HFMD is caused by more than one type of virus, and most of the cases involve young children, according to information posted on the website of China's Health Ministry.

EV71 is one of the most common viruses that can cause HFMD, which usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. If the disease develops, it can lead to death.

To date, none of the young patients from the creche is in critical condition, and none needs to be admitted to hospital, the SSM said in the statement, adding that most of them have recovered.

The SSM first confirmed the occurrence of HFMD at the crche last Friday.

HFMD has led to 28 deaths in China as of Wednesday morning, according to Xinhua's tally based on confirmed death reports from provincial-level health bureaus.

The outbreak of HFMD has led to fatalities mostly in the eastern province of Anhui, where 22 children died after having been infected with EV71. Three deaths were in the southern province of Guangdong, and one in east China's Zhejiang Province.

Macao reports 90 hand-foot-mouth cases
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-08 21:02:29

MACAO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Macao recorded 90 cases of hand-foot- mouth disease (HFMD) so far, only four of which were confirmed as enterovirus 71 (EV71) infections, local health authorities announced Thursday.

Two new cases were found at a local day care center, where the most severe HFMD outbreak occurred, with 16 pupils diagnosed with HFMD, and all four of the EV71 infection cases were found there, according to a press statement released by the Disease Preventive and Control Center of Macao's Health Bureau (SSM).

As the peak time for intestinal virus infections comes, "more cases will be reported in the coming months," SSM said in the statement, adding that the number of HFMD cases recorded this year is set to be higher than last year.

SSM first confirmed the occurrence of HFMD at the day care center last Friday, which has been sealed for thorough cleaning and disinfecting.

HFMD is caused by more than one type of viruses, and most of the cases involve young children, according to information posted on the website of China's Health Ministry.

EV71 is one of the most common viruses that can cause HFMD, which usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. If the disease develops, it can lead to death.

Officials of the SSM Control Center also held a video conference with its Hong Kong counterparts Thursday afternoon, exchanging information of the current HFMD outbreak in the region.

Number of HFMD cases reported in China this year jumped to 19, 962 as of Wednesday, resulting in 28 deaths, according to a Xinhua tally of official figures released by provincial authorities.

Of all the victims, 22 were in Anhui and three in Guangdong, with the rest in Zhejiang, Guangxi and Hunan, respectively.

Kindergartens open again after enterovirus PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Kindergartens have opened again after an outbreak of enterovirus forced local children's schools and kindergartens to close due to the epidemic.
Since May this year, the Health Bureau (SSM) have been paying particular attention to the number of enterovirus cases reported and confirmed in Macau.
These enterovirus cases comprise hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina mouth blisters), but none of the patients was reported in serious condition, the bureau said in statements throughout the past two months.
So far, a total of 395 cases have been reported,
Last month, the number of reported cases went down, the Health Bureau said in a statement released on Monday.
Last week another six cases were reported, however there are no hospitalised patients due to the epidemic, the Health Bureau said in the statement.
With schools and kindergartens having resumed normal school timetable, the Health Bureau will stop its daily inspection of education premisses. However, schools and kindergartens will soon close for holidays, and as such, the bureau will only be reporting major outbreaks, should these occur.
No new EV71 infection have been detected, the total number of which reached 56 so far, according to figures released by the Health Bureau.
EV71 is a viral infection usually found among young children. It is also one of the causative agents for HFMD.
The Health Bureau are urging kindergarten workers as well as school teachers and parents to pay close attention and monitor the situation, and report any outbreak or case of enterovirus, so that the bureau can take proper actions, the statement added.

Kindergarten children suffer from hand, foot, mouth disease

Thursday, 23 October 2008
At least 17 children from the Tung Sin Tong III kindergarten located on Avenida do Hipodromo are down with hand, foot and mouth disease, a statement from the Health Bureau said yesterday.
Since Sunday last week, a total of 17 children of which 7 were from the same class started showing symptoms of the disease with fever, headache, vomiting and fatigue.
Although the extent of the outbreak was ?slight? according to the statement, one of the children was still hospitalised for treatment, but however has already been sent home.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention collected samples from other children in the school as a precautionary measure, and also carried out a sanitary inspection on the premisses.
Children up to the age of five are the most vulnerable to the disease, and the Health Bureau is urging parents, guardians and teachers to look out for personal hygiene on children, making sure they frequently wash their hands.
It typically occurs in small epidemics in nursery schools or kindergartens, usually during the summer and autumn months.

Infectious diseases reported in local school, children's day care centre
Wednesday, 10 December 2008

The Health Bureau (SSM) announced yesterday that three reports of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease and viral gastroenteritis were received from a children's day care centre, a kindergarten and an infant home.
The first report of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) was received from the children day care centre of the Macau Women's Association in Avenida de Venceslau de Morais.
As of yesterday a total of 14 children had showed symptoms of the disease and 10 of them suffered from "minor conditions", the SSM said.
One child was admitted to the hospital but did not show any nerve system or other serious complications.
The Disease Prevention and Control Centre had collected samples from the ill children, of which two were found to contain EV71 intestinal virus, the authority said.

Health inspectors had conducted an investigation into the day care centre and instructed staff to carry out infection control measures such as cleansing and sterilisation.
As well, classes were suspended to avoid cross infections among the children.
The SSM said HFMD could be seen around the world and summer was the high infection season.
The disease mainly occurred on children under five years old and the incubation period was about three to seven days.
Infections were mainly through direct contact with excrement but also included saliva or other contaminated objects.
The early symptoms included fever and soar throat, and then small blisters or rashes would be seen on the palm, legs and buttocks. Also small herpes would be seen inside the mouth and then festered, the SSM said.
The SSM added that there were no vaccines yet to prevent the virus and then urged schools, children homes, parents and students to be aware of personal hygiene, physical health and environmental hygiene.
On the other hand, the other two reports of viral gastroenteritis were received from the Sheng Kung Hui College (kindergarten session) and the Cradle of Hope Association's infant home, both in Taipa.
The SSM said nine students from the kindergarten had vomiting or diarrhoea symptoms, and seven of them had received treatment from medical institutes.
Meanwhile, the Cradle of Hope Association reported five infants to have vomiting or diarrhoea symptoms as of yesterday and four of them were admitted into the hospital.
The ill infants' samples were currently under testing, the SSM said.
Viral gastroenteritis usually occurs in autumn and winter and is easy to break out in "crowded places" such as elderly homes, schools and day care centres, the SSM said.
If collective illness is found in children day care, schools, homes or similar establishments, the SSM should be contacted immediately on +853 2856 1122.
