This is an important development. One translation seems to indicate the H5N1 in Germany does not match the Czech Republic or Hungary.

Is this correct, and does this match failure refer to the sequences from Nurenburg? If so, these would seem to be clade 2.2.2.3

HAMBURG, June 26 (Reuters) - No new cases of the lethal strain of bird flu have been confirmed in wild birds in Germany since the weekend but a dead swan was being tested for it, authorities said on Tuesday.

Six wild birds were confirmed as infected with the dangerous H5N1 strain of birdflu after they were found in Nuremberg in south Germany and were examined as part of a national testing programme.

"The number remains at six, we have no additional cases," a spokeswoman for Germany's Friedrich Loeffler animal disease institute said.

But later on Tuesday the east German regional government of Saxony said it had a suspect H5N1 case in a dead swan. Test results would be received later this week.

Authorities continued to investigate the Nuremberg outbreak, the first in Germany this year, but the Agriculture Ministry believes the incident could be isolated.

Poultry farmers in the Nuremberg region have been ordered to confine all poultry to closed stalls. As of Saturday, a 21-day ban was imposed on bringing poultry or poultry products in or out of the area, which is now a quarantine zone.

Last year, some 13 European Union member states had confirmed cases of bird flu -- Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Greece, Britain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, France and Hungary.

Bird flu has been spreading across southeast Asia, killing two people in Vietnam this month, the first deaths there since 2005.

Globally, the H5N1 virus has killed nearly 200 people out of over 300 known cases, according to the World Health Organisation. None of the victims were from Europe.

It should be noted that this positive is considerably north of the other positives, and therefore may be clade 2.2.2.1, which included isolates from the cat and stone martin and was the largest outbreak in western Europe (and largely confined to northern Germany).

These data suggest there are at least two reservoirs in Germany, and I suspect the Czech outbreaks represents the third.

Thus, there is a good chance that clade 2.2.2.1, 2.2.2.2, and 2.2.2.3 will be detected in the summer in non-migrating wild birds.

Germany (and western Europe) are endemic for H5N1 (and multiple sub-clades).

HAMBURG (Reuters) - Germany identified three more cases of the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu in swans on Tuesday, bringing the total number of wild birds infected to nine, but authorities said they had not changed their risk assessment.
The Friedrich Loeffler animal disease institute said the three swans were found near Leipzig in the eastern state of Saxony. Nine wild birds -- eight swans and a Canada goose -- had now been confirmed as H5N1 cases, it added.
"The new cases from Saxony do not change anything yet in our risk assessment," Thomas Mettenleiter, president of the institute, said in a statement.
Six birds were confirmed at the weekend as infected with H5N1 after they were found in Nuremberg in south Germany and were examined as part of a national testing program.
Authorities continued to investigate the Nuremberg outbreak, the first in Germany this year, but the Agriculture Ministry believes the incident could be isolated.
"Given the current finds, our experts are not yet able to judge whether there will be a more widespread epidemic of the disease similar to last year," Mettenleiter said.
Further tests comparing the latest finds with viruses in Hungary and the Czech Republic should provide clues as to how the H5N1 strain entered Germany, he added.

The discovery followed the confirmation on Sunday of six cases of H5N1 in wild birds found dead near Nuremberg, 200 kilometres (120 miles) further south.
In Frohburg, a three-kilometre security cordon has been set up around the area where the swans were found. All poultry within this area must be kept indoors and dogs and cats are being kept on leads.
The Frohburg case was the second case of the flu strain found in Germany this year, and the third in Europe.
Last week, H5N1 was discovered on a turkey farm in the Czech Republic, and 6,000 turkeys were subsequently slaughtered.
Germany has only recorded one incidence of the feared virus on a farm, in April 2006, after which more than 21,000 poultry were killed.

At the same time strict hygiene regulations for poultry owners must prevent bringing the epidemic in into the stables.

Despite everything epidemic authorities and politics will not come to explain the citizens openly that the bird flu can slam shut still for many years isolated. Bird flu found in second German state

A summer outbreak of bird flu in Germany was confirmed on Tuesday [26 Jun
2007] to have spread to a second state, with 3 swans killed by the deadly
form of avian influenza in a small town close to Leipzig. At the end of
last week, 6 swans killed by the virus were found in a turgid urban pond in
Nuremberg in the state of Bavaria.

The health ministry in Saxony state in Germany's east said 3 dead swans
were found in the Frohburg district, south of Leipzig, and a quick test
established they were infected with the dangerous H5N1 virus. Saxony state
had to exterminate a flock of farm birds last year after they caught H5N1.

More tissue tests are being done at Germany's federal animal-disease
laboratory on the Baltic Sea island of Riems.

In Nuremberg, a municipal spokeswoman said none of the other [how many?
since when? - Mod.AS] dead birds in the city apart from the 6 swans had H5N1.

Scientists on Riems are trying to establish if the virus is connected to
outbreaks of avian influenza at a Czech poultry farm and in Hungary. The
disease has not been detected in Germany between August 2006 and its
appearance late last week in Nuremberg.
