Kolkata, May 23: A fortnight after a bird flu scare caused panic at Matigara in northern West Bengal, nearly 800 chickens have died at a private poultry unit at Rajarhat in North 24 Parganas district due to 'ranikhet' disease.

District Magistrate Provat Mishra said today that the chickens, which died in the past 72 hours, were killed by 'ranikhet' disease and "not bird-flu".

The unit is located close to the NSC Bose international airport.

Mishra said that autopsies were conducted on the dead birds and their carcasses disposed off.

He said that he had asked the district health department to take all measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Nearly 5,000 chickens were earlier found dead at a private poultry unit in Matigara near Siliguri and the cause of their death too was found to be 'ranikhet', a common disease afflicting chickens.
