06.02.2007, 14.52

BAKU, February 6 (Itar-Tass) - Zamina Zeinalova, 37, who was hospitalized in the Pulmonology Research Institute with suspected bird flu, died in Azerbaijan?s capital on Tuesday, a source in the Azerbaijani Health Ministry told Itar-Tass.

According to doctors, Zeinalova, who lived in Boyat, the Neftechala region (about 200 kilometers south of Baku), died of an acute pneumonia. ?However, her blood samples were passed to specialized laboratories of the state veterinary service of the Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry in order to rule out bird flu suspicions,? the source emphasized.

?If necessary Zeinalova?s blood samples will be also sent to London for a specialized laboratory of the World Health Organisation,? the source pointed out.

The Neftechala region of Azerbaijan is situated on the bank of the Kura River, where migratory birds spend winter. Meanwhile, according to the veterinary service, ?No massive mortality among wild and domestic birds was registered in Boyat and in this region on the whole,? the source said.

Teenager Azhdar Askerov, 14, earlier died of pneumonia at the Pulmonology Research Institute in Baku. The bird flu virus was initially suspected in him, but tests taken in Baku and London did not confirm these suspicions.

pic36136.jpg

[ 08 Feb. 2007 15:46 ]

The World Health Organization will announce the results of the tests of samples from Azerbaijani resident suspected of contracting bird flu in two days, Health Minister Ogtay Shireliyev told journalists, APA reports.

The Minister calls on people to be vigilant because of bird flu.
“17,000 examinations were conducted in labs related to birds. No virus has been found. But we should be watchful as the virus has been found in different countries. State Veterinary Service keeps it under control. The Veterinary Service and its local departments should be informed in case of death of wild and domestic birds, so that to take necessary measures. Hygienic procedures should be strongly obeyed when contacting with birds. Even simple measures can help to prevent bird flu,” he said.
Stressing the importance of serious control over bird flu, the Minister said they have prepared and submitted standards of medications and foodstuffs to the Cabinet of Ministers.
“These standards are out-of-date and do not meet the required standards.
Therefore we have improved the standards. We are expecting the Cabinet’s response,” the Minister said.
