A vaccine that provides broad immunity to many influenza strains?a pan-influenza or universal vaccine?could be used pre-emptively to protect against seasonal and pandemic influenza. Concern over the delay in vaccine availability during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic has increased the pressure to develop pre-emptive approaches. New findings from studies of the H1N1 pandemic and new vaccine approaches are now providing a better insight into what is needed for pre-emptive protection.
