Anmore company wins technology award for medical break-through

An Anmore company has picked up a $37,000 prize for coming up with a life-saving medical technology that could help people with breathing problems related to the H1N1 virus or swine flu.

Lungpacer Medical Inc. won the BC Innovation Council third prize for its new therapeutic device in the 2009 New Ventures BC competition. The award is to be announced at a gala in Vancouver tonight (Sept. 24)

The device helps with issues associated with the mechanical ventilation of critically ill patients.

Lungpacer electrodes are intravenously placed in patients to rhythmically activate the diaphragm to prevent muscle-disuse atrophy, resulting in faster patient recovery, a shorter stay in intensive care, lower hospitalization costs and greater patient access to scarce mechanical ventilators during flu pandemics.

"If you could for a moment rise up out of your own beloved skin and appraise ant, human, and virus as equally resourceful beings, you might admire the accord they have all struck in Africa. Back in your skin of course, you'll shriek for a cure. But remember: air travel, roads, cities, prostitution, the congregation of people for efficient commerce - these are gifts of godspeed to the virus"
