• Pigeons reservoir for H5N1?

Several studies have demonstrated that pigeons are particular resistant to AI Viruses. (2) (3), but only few were focussed on H5N1 Types.
Most experiments show a minor infection rate and mortality, low percentage of antibody responders and virusshedding.

A recent work (1) using several currently circulating strains (a) in China confirmed a higher resistance (< 37,5 % DR, most strains no lethality) to challenge in comparison to chickens and quails, but showed, that all tested pigeons had positive tissue samples from glandular stomach. Identification of virus in tissues is not common in pigeons and the new finding indicates that pigeons might be carriers of avian influenza virus.
