Brunei reports no new coronavirus cases, one recovered patient tests positive again

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (XINHUA) - Brunei reported no new cases of the Covid-19 disease on Sunday (April 12), and the country's tally of cases stand at 136 since the first case was detected in the sultanate on March 9.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, one recovered patient who has been discharged from the National Isolation Centre was found to be positive with the coronavirus again.

The patient began to develop symptoms for a second time and tested positive for Covid-19 12 days after his initial release... https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se...positive-again

WHO looking into reports of coronavirus patients who tested positive after recovery

GENEVA —The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday that it was looking into reports of some COVID-19 patients testing positive again after initially testing negative for the disease while being considered for discharge.

South Korean officials on Friday reported 91 patients thought cleared of the new coronavirus had tested positive again. Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a briefing that the virus may have been “reactivated” rather than the patients being re-infected.
The Geneva-based WHO, asked about the report from Seoul, told Reuters in a brief statement: “We are aware of these reports of individuals who have tested negative for COVID-19 using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing and then after some days testing positive again.

“We are closely liaising with our clinical experts and working hard to get more information on those individual cases. It is important to make sure that when samples are collected for testing on suspected patients, procedures are followed properly,” it said.... https://globalnews.ca/news/6809875/w...test-recovery/

SEOUL, March 31 (Yonhap) -- A Navy sailor has tested positive again for the new coronavirus after having fully recovered from the disease, the defense ministry said Tuesday.

The sailor stationed on the southern island of Jeju was released from a hospital last week after recovering fully from the COVID-19 virus following monthlong treatment.

But he redeveloped symptoms while in preventive quarantine, and tested positive again Tuesday, officials said, adding that he was immediately sent to a hospital.

Last week, two other military personnel -- an Army officer and an Air Force contractor -- were found to have contracted the virus again after making full recoveries...https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2020033...tional/defense

SOUTH KOREA SEES RISE IN 'REACTIVATED' CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS WHO WERE INITIALLY CURED OF VIRUS

BY JASON LEMON ON 4/13/20 AT 9:07 AM EDT
After a person is infected with a virus and recovers, they generally develop a level of immunity. Because of this, scientists can train people's immune systems to recognize and fight off diseases by infecting them with an antigen so they can develop immunity to it....

If people do not develop immunity after being infected by the coronavirus, as some scientists fear may be the case, that would make it more difficult to develop a vaccine. However, the health experts in South Korea currently believe it is more like that faulty tests and reactivation are more plausible explanations.

WHO Officials: Unclear If Recovered Coronavirus Patients Are Immune to 2nd Infection

World Health Organization officials said not all people who recover from the coronavirus have the antibodies to fight a second infection. This raises concerns that patients don’t develop immunity after surviving COVID-19

By William Feuer, Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | CNBC • Published 4 hours ago • Updated 4 hours ago

World Health Organization officials said Monday not all people who recover from the coronavirus have the antibodies to fight a second infection, raising concern that patients may not develop immunity after surviving COVID-19.

“With regards to recovery and then re-infection, I believe we do not have the answers to that. That is an unknown,” Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of WHO’s emergencies program, said at a press conference at the organization’s Geneva headquarters on Monday.

....A preliminary study of patients in Shanghai found that some patients had “no detectable antibody response” while others had a very high response, said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s lead scientist on COVID-19. Whether the patients who had a strong antibody response were immune to a second infection is “a separate question,” she added.

More than 300,000 of the 1.87 million coronavirus cases across the world have recovered, WHO officials noted, adding that they need more data from recovered patients to understand their antibody response, whether that gives them immunity and for how long......

“There are many reasons why we might see reactivation of infection either with the same infection or another infectious agent,” he said. In general, “there are many situations in viral infection where someone doesn’t clear the virus entirely from their system.” Some patients can also clear the main infection but develop a secondary bacterial infection, he said.... https://www.necn.com/news/coronaviru...ction/2259410/

Covid-19 special: Discharged British man tests positive again
                By Huu Cong, Manh Tung April 14, 2020 | 08:37 am GMT+7

In an unusual development, “Patient 22,” a British man discharged from Da Nang March 27 has tested positive again, putting HCMC on guard.

He had come into contact with dozens of people in HCMC before leaving the country, local officials said.

Authorities learnt of this special case Sunday evening, Nguyen Tan Binh, Director of HCMC Health Department said at a Monday afternoon meeting.

He said that the Covid-19 illness might have recurred within the patient or he might have got infected again after he was discharged from the hospital in Da Nang.

"From now on, visitors to Ho Chi Minh City must be closely monitored," Binh said.

Reports had said that female "Patient 50," a 24-year-old Vietnamese woman being treated in the northern Quang Ninh Province, and "Patient 91," a 43-year-old British man in HCMC, had also tested positive after negative results and they are still undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, a Reuters report Monday said at least 116 people initially cleared of the novel coronavirus had tested positive again in South Korea.

The report quoted Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), as saying the virus may have been reactivated rather than the patients being re-infected.

It also cited other experts’ opinions that "faulty tests may be playing a role, or remnants of the virus may still be in patients’ systems but not be infectious or of danger to the host or others."

The 66-year-old British man had flown into Hanoi from London on the Vietnam Airlines flight VN54 on March 2.

The British man had been hospitalised in Danang City in Vietnam but after being declared healthy and free of coronavirus he headed for a flight home from Tan Son Nhat Airport

...They said that the 60-year-old man, who was not named, had been admitted to hospital on March 8 and released on the March 27 after testing negative three times.

After that, he had been quarantined for another two weeks at a hotel in Danang City in line with guidelines issued by the Health Ministry.

He had then flown to Ho Chi Minh City at the end of last week and was tested while staying at an airport hotel while waiting for the next flight
                  .

He had actually boarded the flight when the city's Centre for Diseases Control revealed that the man had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus....At the heart of the outbreak in February, China had also confirmed cases where people who appeared to have recovered and tested negative were later found to have tested positive, confounding the popular belief that those who survive would be immune at least in the immediate future from catching the disease again.

It is reportedly the first time it has happened in Vietnam.....

                      https://www.aol.co.uk/news/2020/04/1...id-19-relapse/

The family of a "devoted dad" who died after appearing to have recovered from Covid-19 have described how he suffered a sudden relapse before he died as he was being rushed to hospital.

Dom Merrix suffered a heart attack after he had a rapid decline in his health which left him struggling to breathe at his home in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
The 48-year-old had been in self-isolation for 16 days after he began to suffer the symptoms of the coronavirus although he was not tested for it.

Family friend Rachel Hibbert said: "He got up as normal and wanted to have a shower.

                      "He sounded absolutely fine.

"Then bang out of nowhere it happened.

"He texted his daughter to open the windows because he was struggling to breathe.

"He then texted Sarah begging for help.

"Sarah came downstairs and found him on his hands and knees struggling to breathe.

"When the paramedics arrived they put him on the trolley and asked him to lean back but he couldn't do it.
"That was it. Then the doors to the ambulance shut. They didn't see him alive again.

"His heart stopped and the paramedics spent 20 minutes outside the house trying to get it started again.

"By the time he got to hospital they couldn't bring him back."
"The only security we have is our ability to adapt."

The reinfection has health officials worried the illness could stay dormant after signs of recovery.

                          • Japan’s prime minister has asked schools to close in an effort to curb the outbreak.

Japan is reporting its first case of a person becoming reinfected with the coronavirus after showing signs they had fully recovered, according to Reuters.

Osaka’s prefectural government confirmed Wednesday a woman working as a tour bus guide tested positive for coronavirus for the second time after developing a sore throat and chest pain. The woman, who is said to be in her 40s, first tested positive in late January and was discharged from the hospital on Feb. 1 after showing signs of recovery.

Reuters reports Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said the government would need to monitor the condition of others who were infected and later discharged as health experts investigate testing positive for COVID-19 after an initial recovery.
