History classes rarely talk about the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-19, but it was perhaps the greatest natural disaster in history, killing from 40 to 100 million people worldwide. It was a rampaging virus - before science knew about viruses - and no part of the earth was spared, except a tiny island in Brazil's Amazon River Delta.
And it came to Idaho.

In 1932, Dr. Frank Wenz was buried in Rathdrum's Evergreen Cemetery. He survived the Spanish Flu and was one of just two physicians helping the sick in Rathdrum during that historic time. Local history records say, "Dr. Wenz lost very few patients ... because he had something he got out of an old German doctor book and he just came out and gave (it to) all of the people in our neighborhood."
He was remembered in those days as "a kind and decent man ... probably the best doctor Idaho ever had."...
