A 58-year-old man in the Mekong Delta Province of Hau Giang has become the 11th person to die from influenza A/H1N1, better known as swine flu, in Vietnam this year.
Ly Van Thanh, who hailed from Long My District, had a headache, cough, and high fever on June 18, said Dr. Tran Phong Nha, director of Long My Preventive Health Center.
He had received treatment at a private clinic for about one week before being transferred to Long My District General Hospital.
Thanh was later transferred to Military Health Hospital 121 in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho, where he died on June 27, according to Nha.
After that the Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City, which conducted postmortem tests, confirmed that he had been infected with the A/H1N1 strain of swine flu.
Six of Thanh?s family members been isolated and are being tested for swine flu, while local health authorities have sterilized the environment around his house, online newspaper VnExpress reported.
Meanwhile, authorities in Ca Mau Province, also in the Mekong Delta, reported that three people recently tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
Le Hoang Be, director of the province?s Department of Interior, was among the patients, VnExpress reported.
