Viet Nam may begin producing H5N1 vaccines for humans next year

HA NOI ? Viet Nam may begin producing bird flu vaccines for humans next year, according to the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology's director Nguyen Tran Hien.

The institute, which started researching development of the vaccine in 2005, is now producing an experimental version of the vaccine and testing its safety and effectiveness.

"These tests will facilitate the production and use of the vaccine for humans," Hien said.

The institute plans to carry out clinical trials of the vaccine at the end of this year, said Hien, adding that their research results would then be submitted to Ministry of Health.

The institute's statistics showed that between 2007 and 2010, there were 5 to 7 people contracting bird flu each year in Viet Nam. The cases were reported in provinces across the country, and most people had become infected after being in contact or eating poultry during the end of winter and beginning of spring. However, there is still no concrete proof that the disease can be transmitted from human to human.

Bird flu has re-emerged in ten provinces across the country, including Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Soc Trang and Ha Nam. Concerns have grown over bird flu recently as the virus is mutating into a new form that will require the development of a new vaccine.

Hien warned that unless proper preventive measures are taken, more people may catch bird flu.

Vietnam creates indigenous bird flu vaccine

Vietnamese scientists at the Company for Vaccine and Biological Production (Vabiotech), under the Ministry of Health, have succeeded in producing a vaccine against bird flu, after eight years of scientific research.

The vaccine is being considered as one of the 15 important scientific achievements in the medical field in the last 10 years.

Dr. Professor Nguyen Thu Van, director of the vaccine research centre, said her efforts and those of her colleagues? are going to be rewarded when bird flu vaccine Fluvax will be used effectively to cure people.

Bird flu hit Vietnam in 2003, spreading rapidly throughout the Southeast Asian country, recording 52 deaths. The World Health Organisation warned that bird flu virus could mutate during the pandemic to a more lethal form to cause deadly human flu if there is no effective vaccine found.

Accordingly, Dr. Van and her colleagues started on research to make a vaccine to fight bird flu. The research team decided to develop the vaccine from monkey kidney cells, as they are cheaper and safer than similar vaccines using the culture of embryonic chicken eggs currently being developed by other countries...

A/H5N1 flu vaccine tested on the final stage

Today (8/4), in Ha Nam, the Ministry of Health to conduct clinical trials on the A/H5N1 flu vaccine phase 3, also the final stage. This is an important step to determine whether to allow production to mass vaccine or not.

Calculated from the first cases in 2003 to now, Vietnam has 123 cases of influenza A/H5N1 and 61 deaths, the mortality rate of up to 50%.

This time round testing by the Army Medical Institute directly performed, was conducted on more than 1,000 volunteers in two provinces of Thanh Hoa and Ha Nam. Those tests are checked carefully to determine the health status completely healthy, non-pregnant women, before being vaccinated. This is their second injection nose after the 1st injection was given 1 month ago. 28 days later, they will take blood samples for testing, evaluating the effectiveness of vaccine protection.

Before that, the experts have conducted two phase test on nearly 300 people in 2008 and 2009. Military Medical Academy will complete the last stage of this test in May, then moved to the Ministry of Health to test out the official results.

A/H5N1 flu vaccine by the Vaccine and Biologicals Company No. 1 for almost 3 years of research, Ministry of Health has been recognized as one of 26 outstanding achievements.
