Measles vaccination was introduced in Vietnam in 1982 [24] and coverage with one-dose at one year of age has exceeded 50% since 1986 and 90% since 1993 [25]. However, a measles outbreak started in Northern Vietnam in October 2008. In contrast to the pre-vaccine era, incidence was high in 20?24 year olds [24]?[25] and a number of cases of adult AME were admitted to the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases (NHTD). Paradoxically, the epidemiology partially reflects the success of vaccination in reducing transmission and childhood illness because there is less natural infection to boost vaccine-induced immunity such that protection starts to wane in young adults [24]?[25]. This has been widely recognized and a two-dose vaccine schedule is now recommended and was adopted in Vietnam in 2006

The latest death figure includes three cases reported Monday from the north central province of Nghe An, where 158 children have been hospitalized for measles treatment since February and 85 percent of them were not vaccinated.
Nghe An health authorities have asked for seven more respirators and ten monitors to serve the rising number of patients.

Measles killing mass in Vietnam by hitting lungs, not brain
          Wednesday, April 23, 2014 14:00

Measles deaths in Vietnam rose to 127 on Tuesday, as doctors announced unusual developments in the virus' effects on children respiratory systems.
The virus appears to be attacking patients' ability to breath, rather than the brain as it did in previous years, leading to fatality rates higher than usual, doctors said during a conference held by the Health Ministry.

Doctors at the event said that many patients died of pneumonia or other related complications within their first few days of infection, according to Thoi bao Kinh te Saigon Online...

HA NOI (VNS) ? The Bach Mai General Hospital's paediatrics faculty has saved the life of a three-month-old girl, the hospital's second-youngest measles patient, who was discharged from the hospital on March 20.

The baby, Dang Truc Chi from Thanh Tri District in Ha Noi, was brought to the hospital one month ago with symptoms of measles, such as high fever, a rash, a serious cough and sniffling.

The faculty director, Nguyen Tien Dung, said that measles had attacked her lungs and destroyed her immune system.

"That's why the baby was given emergency aid with a respiration machine, an antibiotic injection and an antibody containing drugs and Vitamin A," explained Dung...
