Measles cases on the rise, 3 dead

VietNamNet Bridge ? More than 240 people have tested positive to measles in 24 provinces since the beginning of the year, including three child fatalities, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Most of the patients were from northern Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Yen Bai provinces.

One of three children to die from the disease was from Ha Noi with the remaining two from Yen Bai Province.

More than 1,000 people were diagnosed with the disease last year.

Director of MoH's Preventive Medicine Department Tran Dac Phu said the situation in the nation's big cities, such as Ha Noi and HCM City, was not the reason for worry as patients were not concentrated in particular areas and vaccination rates were high. However, he said the disease was still dangerous...

...Vaccinated not at risk of new measles virus

A new genotype D8 of measles virus has been identified in the on-going epidemic in the southern provinces by HCM City Pasteur Institute, however those who have been properly vaccinated will not be seriously affected, said health expert.

The disease has broken out in 19 southern provinces and cities.

                According to WHO, there are currently 8 grades designated A,B, C,D,E, F, G and H. Within these grades, there are 23 recognised genotypes including A, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, D1, D2, ?, D8, D9, H1, and H2

Of them, genotype H1 is endemic in Viet Nam and caused outbreaks in 2009.

Dr Truong Huu Khanh, head of the HCM City Paediatrics Hospital No.1's neurology and infectious diseases ward told Viet Nam News there is no worry about the dangers of the genotype D8 because it does not present any further danger than the previous genotype of the disease.

It also does not foster epidemic transmission, Khanh said.

Moreover, the genotype D8 does not reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine, he added.

The existing measles vaccine belongs to genotype A, he said and added that it prevents against all genotypes of the virus.

The genotype D8 was isolated from sporadic measles cases in some countries including China, Japan and Malaysia...

A number of children in Hanoi and other northern provinces are experiencing a second measles breakout this year.

Most of the children infected have yet to receive vaccinations, said Professor Tien Dung, head of Pediatrics Ward of Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi.

                    25 children die of measles

VietNamNet Bridge ? Twenty-five children, most from the northern region of Vietnam, have died of measles since the end of last year, according to the Health Ministry.

Medical experts say that the genotypes of the measles virus in Vietnam are no different than those of other countries in the world, and that its virulence has not suddenly increased. Therefore, the diagnostic treatment guidelines can remain unchanged.

They also say that the measles epidemic is now on a downward trend. The measles vaccination schedule has not changed and health professionals insist that the vaccine is safe and effective.

Dr. Tran Dac Phu, Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine, says that from the end of last year, there were more than 3,300 cases of measles. Of those, 25 children died...

Crowded hospitals could be spreading measles in Vietnam
                      Sunday, April 06, 2014 10:28

Cases of children allegedly contracting measles at hospitals have parents worrying that the overcrowded facilities are worsening the the recent spat of measles outbreaks.

The Central Pediatrics Hospital in Hanoi has received compensation demands from parents whose 13-month-old baby just died of measles after going to the hospital for pneumonia treatment.

Dr Tran Van Hoc from the hospital said cross-infections in hospital environments are possible and doctors usually warn patients of the risk. But would be hard to conclude that the baby caught measles the hospital instead of anywhere else, Hoc said...

                          Measles Sweep Through Vietnam
                          By Vu Trong Khanh

HANOI--Vietnam is in the grip of its worst ever measles outbreak, with the infection tied to at least 108 deaths since December in a toll that is expected to climb.

Previously, the worst year was 2009 to 2010, when two people died of measles in the Southeast Asian country. Authorities blame parents for not getting their children vaccinated and the three-to-five year cyclical nature of the virus, making this a particularly dangerous moment. The country is stepping up its efforts to immunize children under three years old.

The outbreak has centered in northern Vietnam, including the capital Hanoi, where many of the city's largest hospitals are swamped with measles patients.

"This has been the worst-ever measles outbreak in terms of the number of fatalities," Nguyen Tran Hien, director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Hanoi, told The Wall Street Journal...

Over 7,000 children have contracted measles and at least 111 have died of the disease since it recurred in Vietnam late last year, much higher than reported by the Ministry of Health last week, a central hospital director announced Wednesday.

These latest figures were revealed by Dr. Nguyen Van Kinh, director of the Central Tropical Diseases Hospital in Hanoi, after attending a closed-door meeting on April 16 with the representatives of the World Health Organization, Bach Mai Hospital, Dong Da Hospital, and the Hanoi Department of Health.

Compared to the respective figures released by the health ministry seven days ago, Dr. Kinh?s numbers are two and four times higher.
