There was a ProMed report on an outbreak of Streptococcus suis that led to 3 deaths a few weeks back. The following report of 2 additional deaths may be a continuation of the same outbreak.

"Two persons dead after contact with diseased pigs

    Wednesday, Feb 13, 2013

On February 2, Tran Van Mai, deputy chairman of the People?s Committee of Dai Loc District in Quang Nam Province said vets had destroyed eight pigs that were diseased and could have been the reason for the deaths of Pham Thi Nguyet, 42, owner of a slaughter house in Binh Tay Village who died on February 8; and Nguyen Nguyen, 41, owner of a slaughter house in Xuan Tay Village who died February 10.

Health staff took samples of the two persons to test at the Department of Animal Health in the central city of Da Nang.

On February 4, Nguyet bought 24 pigs from vet Vo Thien Sinh in Dai Thang Commune for selling in the market.

However, after killing eight pigs she experienced symptoms of fever, diarrhea and internal bleeding. She was rushed to hospital but succumbed to the infection on February 8.

Later, vet Sinh brought the remaining pigs to Nguyen and asked him to slaughter them. Nguyen had the same symptoms as Nguyet after he killed two pigs and died on February 10."

Two persons dead after contact with diseased pigs
    -------------------------------------------
Health authorities in the central province of Quang Nam suspect cause of death of two persons due to contact with diseased pigs. On 2 Feb 2013, Tran Van Mai, deputy chairman of the People's Committee of Dai Loc District in Quang Nam Province said vets had destroyed eight pigs that were diseased and could have been the reason for the deaths of the 42-year-old [female] owner of a slaughter house in Binh Tay Village who died on 8 Feb 2013, and the 41-year-old owner of a slaughter house in Xuan Tay Village who died on 10 Feb 2013. Health staff took samples of the two persons to test at the Department of Animal Health in the central city of Da Nang.

On 4 Feb 2013 the Binhh Tay resident bought 24 pigs from vet Vo Thien Sinh in Dai Thang Commune for selling in the market. However, after killing eight pigs she experienced symptoms of fever, diarrhea and internal bleeding. She was rushed to hospital but succumbed to the infection on 8 Feb 2013.

Later, vet Sinh brought the remaining pigs to the Xuan Tay villager and asked him to slaughter them. The villager developed the same symptoms as the other owner after he had killed two pigs and he died on 10 Feb 1013.

After the local residents tipped of the authorities, vets from the Department of Animal Health in Dai Loc District arrived at the houses of the two owners to bury the remaining pigs.

[The descriptions of the deaths of the pigs and the disease developed by the two pig-keepers in separate villages in Quang Nam Province are too sparse to suggest a causation. The deaths of the two villagers slaughtering the pigs seems to have been rapid and abrupt. Curiously a local vet and the Animal Health Department vets dealing with the situation so far seem to have been unaffected. Further information is awaited.

This is the earliest report that I've seen and the only one that mentions anything about a conflict with local villagers. Machine translated from original article :

Re: Vietnam: Two persons dead after contact with diseased pigs

This article from local media seems to be reporting a possible link between these deaths and a new outbreak of PRRS (see new FT thread here), but also mentions the strep (S. suis?) in the pigs as well.

            Machine translation of original article:

            15/02/2013 05:42

"Quick PRRS outbreak in Quang Nam

TT - The government confirmed the Dai Loc District People's Committee (Quang Nam province): PRRS in pigs broke up in Dai Tan.
By the afternoon of 14-2, the district has infected nearly 160 pigs, including 20 pigs died (mainly in Dai Tan). It is worth mentioning that this outbreak is believed to cause the death of the two slaughterhouse owner Pham Thi Nguyet (Resident Dai Thang) and Nguyen Nguyen (residents of Dai Tan). Both victims were dead comfort due to streptococcal infection in pigs.

At the Dai Tan, Dalian Minh Thang people worried about the blue ear pig disease is showing signs of outbreak. At each home, people take all measures such as spraying lime, chemical sanitizer spray pens and around the house. Start with people in Dai Tan condition determined to prevent, not for the government to bury pigs died and are suffering locally because that will cause environmental pollution.

Phan Duc Tinh, vice president of Dai Loc District People's Committee, said that from the 1st festival of Dai Loc District People's Committee in collaboration with the Department of Animal Health Quang Nam focuses zoning, inspection and disposal of dead pigs. There is also concentrated chemical disinfection in housing in the district."
