Dengue fever on the rise in northern, central provinces

HA NOI ? Dengue fever is on the rise in the central and northern localities, reports the Ministry of Health.

In Da Nang, about 600 people have been stricken with the mosquito-borne disease so far this year, 10 times higher than for the first three months of last year.

Almost 100 incidents of the disease had been reported in Ha Noi with one fatality - in Tan Minh Commune, Soc Son District, said the Preventive Health Centre's Disease Control Department director, Le Duc Tuyen.

The centre was planning to prevent any spread of the disease in communes, clinics and schools through a clean up of the environment, and raising public awareness about the threat, the director said.

But the Health Ministry's Preventive Health and Environment Department said that although 7,300 incidents of dengue fever were confirmed throughout Viet Nam to March, the figure was 28 per cent less than for the same three months of last year.

At least three of those infected had died.

Clinical symptoms of the disease had changed and patients needed to have their blood tested to confirm infection, explained Da Nang Preventive Health Centre director Ton That Thanh.

The national target programme for the prevention of dengue fever from 2006-10 had been re-launched this year, said the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology's Insect and Animal Department head, Tran Vu Phong.

Its focus would be to improve the skills of all medical workers.

Stagnant water enables the mosquitoes to reproduce and develop and is a major reason for the spread of the disease; people are encouraged to clean around their dwellings and spray mosquito killer. ? VN

Dengue fever cases soar in central city

This was 21 times higher than the same period last year and equivalent to the figure reported in the first ten months of last year, the department said. Hospitals in the city's districts are admitting 60 to 62 people a week, with students accounting for the majority of patients.

District health centres urged to expand war on dengue

HCM CITY ? The HCM City Department of Health has ordered district-level preventive medicine centres to focus on prevention of dengue fever also at schools, offices, and industrial zones.

At a meeting held in HCM City yesterday, Le Truong Giang, the department's deputy head, said the centres had taken prevention measures in residential areas but not the other sites which account for 14 per cent of dengue cases.

The incidence was not yet high but it would increase in the next few months with the onset of the rains, he said.

The centres should get local people's committees to set up teams to check schools, offices, and industrial zones to eradicate mosquitoes, he added.

Nguyen Dac Tho, deputy head of the city Preventive Medicine Centre, said nearly 300 dengue patients were hospitalised in May ? 14.6 per cent more than in April ? mostly from Districts 8, 5, 6, Binh Thanh, and Binh Tan.

One person died of the disease in May, he added.

However, so far this year the total number of patients with dengue had fallen by half, he added.

Giang also called on the preventive medicine centres to be vigilant against hand, foot and mouth disease.

The disease continued to plague the city since people's awareness of it was still low, he said.

Health officials should increase disseminating information about the disease to improve people's awareness, he added.

In May 328 children contracted the disease, an increase of 8.6 per cent month on month.

Most of the victims are from the districts of Go Vap, Hoc Mon, Thu Duc, 7,8, 12, 9 and Binh Tan. ? VNS

Dengue on the rise in Mekong Delta

MEKONG DELTA ? A significant increase in the number of patients hospitalised for dengue fever was reported in the Mekong Delta region two months prior to the virus' peak season, health experts have said.

Statistics from An Giang Province's Preventive Medicine Centre showed that as of yesterday, more than 1,180 people have contracted the disease, including three deaths and 240 patients with very serious symptoms.

The number of dengue fever patients in the province is 1.6 times higher than the same period last year. Nine out of the province's 11 districts have reported patients hospitalised for treatment, according to the statistics.

Figures from Dong Thap Province's Preventive Medicine Centre revealed that more than 800 people have been stricken with the mosquito-born disease so far this year, including two fatalities, an increase of 360 cases compared to the same period last year. Eight hundred cases and one death have been reported in Tien Giang Province.

Deputy Director Vo Huy Danh of An Giang Province's Preventive Medicine Centre said the disease had spread widely in both urban and rural areas, and that an increasing number of dengue patients were expected in coming months.

There was currently not a remedy for the disease and implementing prevention measures was the best method to protect health and avoid a breakout of the disease, he said.

Danh said the centre has sprayed chemicals in two communes that showed signs of the epidemic and a campaign has been launched to encourage people to kill mosquitoes around their homes.

A team of health counsellors planned to go to 15 high-risk communes to deliver advice to local residents about the prevention of dengue fever and a hotline was established to give timely assistance, Danh said.

Dr Luu Thi Thu Ha, head of Dong Thap Province's Preventive Medicine Centre's Contagious Diseases Unit, said the department would spray chemicals at schools and public places in the four ?hot' districts of Thap Muoi, Chau Thanh, Cao Lanh and Sa Dec. ? VNS

Vietnam: Dengue fever increases at alarming rate

                Via VietNamNet Bridge:

                Excerpt:
The HCMC Department of Health on Wednesday voiced grave concern about dengue fever that is peaking alongside the advent of the rainy season.
Nguyen Van Nghiem, head of the Medicine Office under the department, told the Daily that the city’s hospital begin to admit many people who are suffering from dengue fever, particularly the city’s Tropical Disease, and Children No. 1 and No. 2 hospitals.

According to Nghiem, dengue is concentrating in many districts, including Thu Duc, Binh Thanh, Hoc Mon, Binh Chanh, Tan Phu, and districts 8 and 9. These localities are more crisscrossed with canals and reservoirs as favorable condition for mosquitoes to grow.

Meanwhile, the HCMC Children Hospital No 2 reported that it receives around 15 children each day from southern provinces like An Giang, Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces due to the fever. Currently, the hospital is treating some 60 children.

“Children mainly are hospitalized when they have serious symptoms. Thus, doctors are facing with difficulties in treatment,” said Dinh Anh Tuan, vice head of Transmission Disease Department of the hospital.

In the same boat is the city’s Children Hospital No 1, which said that it daily receives five to eight new dengue fever cases, mainly from the Mekong Delta.
Provincial health departments in the Mekong Delta provinces reported that since early this year, An Giang has 1,000 dengue positive cases, doubling that in the year-ago period. At least three people have been killed by the disease.

                  Vietnam raises dengue fever alert

The total number of cases Vietnam has recorded so far is about 42,000 including 33 deaths all over the country since the beginning of the year, said the Ministry of Health on August 23.

The number of people suffering from the mosquito-born viral disease amounted quickly in all parts of the country especially in the central and the highlands regions. 18 provinces and cities have reported the mosquito-born infection, announced the ministry.

The highlands provinces have seen 4,813 cases of dengue fever, nine times higher than in the same period last year...

...Meanwhile, the southern provinces of Ben Tre, An Giang, Dong Thap and Soc Trang are battling massive outbreaks of the epidemic. Nguyen Ba Minh, director of the Department of Health in the Mekong delta province of Ben Tre, said the mosquito-borne disease has claimed five lives and approximately 3,000 people have been affected in the province especially in the two districts Ba Tri and Binh Dai.

The Mekong delta province of An Giang reported over 130 people suffering from the disease every week and approximately 2,300 patients have recorded so far, double against the same period last year. The government must take bold steps to contain an outbreak of dengue fever in the area.

The central provinces of Da Nang and Phu Yen have recorded 3,836 cases of dengue fever with one death.
