                        by News Desk
                        August 5, 2019

The African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in Vietnam has spread significantly since the first outbreak was reported on 19 February 2019. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported last week that a total of 62 provinces/cities reported outbreaks, about 3,700,000 pigs have died from the disease or been culled as a control measure.

Vietnam has taken a number of actions to include issuing guidance on the handling and disposal of African swine fever-infected pigs and the control of transportation of pigs for breeding and commercial farming in and outside ASF areas, to name a couple...

African swine fever hits all localities in Vietnam
                            By Nguyen Quy September 3, 2019 | 09:32 pm GMT+7

Ninh Thuan Province, the only Vietnamese locality that had not been infected by the African swine flu so far, has fallen.

Last Saturday, the central province's sub-department of livestock production and animal health said the incurable disease that afflicts pigs but not humans was detected at a farm in Ninh Son District.

After 354 pigs at this farm died abnormally, tests showed that they were infected with African swine fever.

Veterinary officials said all the infected pigs have been killed and measures taken to minimize the spread of the disease...

Vietnam says African swine fever outbreak slows, urges farmers to rebuild herds
                              Reuters
                              Published: a day ago

HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam has urged farmers to restore pig herds battered by an outbreak of African swine fever as the spread of the disease has shown signs of slowing, officials said on Thursday, to prepare for a surge in demand expected for Lunar New Year in January.

Since the disease was first detected in February, it has spread to all 63 provinces in Vietnam, forcing the cull of more than 5 million pigs, or 18 percent of the total hog herd, and driving up prices nearly 70%.

"Farmers' efforts to enhance hygienic conditions on farms have helped put a brake on the spread," Nguyen Xuan Duong, the head of the department of livestock production, told Reuters, adding that improving weather conditions had helped.

"We encourage large-sized farms that meet hygienic requirements to expand their pig production."...

African swine fever infected pigs dumped on river bank in central Vietnam
                                By Hoang Tao October 24, 2019 | 02:59 pm GMT+7

Seven sacks of pigs infected with African swine fever were spotted on the banks of a river in Nghe An Wednesday.

They had been dumped there the night before in the central province’s Ngoc Son Commune.

After confirmation that the pigs were infected with the incurable disease, officials examined and buried them with "proper procedures."...
