Washington reports first flu death of 2018-19 season
by KATU StaffTuesday, October 23rd 2018
PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. Flu season is starting up in the Pacific Northwest, and health officials in Washington say they have confirmed the states first flu death of the 2018-19 season.
The patient, a Pierce County man in his 40s, died on Monday from flu-related complications. He had chronic health concerns that increased his health risk, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
This death is a reminder of the importance of early vaccination, especially for those with diabetes, obesity, asthma, and other risk factors for influenza-associated complications, said Public Health Nurse Matthew Rollosson. Immunization against influenza not only protects you, it also reduces the risk of influenza in the community.
Last year, 296 people in Washington died from the flu.
