The number of flu deaths in Pierce County suspected of being caused by the swine flu virus increased to 12 Tuesday, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
Lab tests received by the county indicate a Pierce County man in his 20s who died Dec. 31 had H1N1, health department spokesman Dick Ferguson said.
The man had been hospitalized for six weeks before he died, Ferguson said, and he had underlying health conditions that contributed to his death.
The death raises the total flu deaths in Washington to 87 since the pandemic hit in April, said Donn Moyer, media relations manager at the state Department of Health.
