Sound like there were two cases of pediatric H1N1 viral myositis/rhabdomyolysis in Kitsap County in the same medical practice. I think influenza associated rhabdomyolysis is rare, though H1N1 has more reports than other flu viruses. Still wonder if there is an environmental issue here. Kitsap has had problems with whooping cough outbreaks and also is one of the highest cancer rate counties in WA state.

Kitsap girl's flu-related death helps save life of second child By Gabe Cohen and KOMO Staff Sunday, January 24th 2016
... Pegy Lowery, Piper's mom, brought her in for a checkup the day before she died.
Al-Agba said she didn't see any red flags.
"She looked like any child with the flu, yet there was this cascade of things going on inside her we couldn't see," Al-Agba told KOMO News.
After Piper passed away, Al-Agba began researching and learned that Piper had complained of calf pain.
It was only a week earlier that Al-Agba had been visited by another young girl also suffering from the flu.
"I have a young child coming in, a girl, and she doesn't have very impressive symptoms," Al-Agba said.
The girl would have normally been sent home had she not mentioned the pain in her calf.
Doctors found she had the H1N1 strain, just like Piper.
"She was heading down the same road absolutely," Al-Agba said.
Treatment was administered to the young girl just in time, and she's recovering.

                        Local
Influenza is actively circulating locally. During CDC week 5 (Jan. 31- Feb. 6), for local laboratories reporting, 26.7% of
specimens tested were positive for influenza. Influenza B is the most commonly identified virus. Local hospitals reported
2 hospitalizations for week 6 (Feb. 7-13); 12 hospitalizations were reported during the previous week. Six Pierce County
schools reported absenteeism over 10% during week 6. No facilities reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness last
week. An influenza-associated death was reported during week 6, an adult age 40s with influenza A-H1N1 (2009
pandemic strain). A total of two influenza-associated deaths have been reported so far this season (since Oct. 4).

                        State
Influenza is characterized as regional in Washington. During week 5 (Jan. 31-Feb. 6), World Health Organization/National
Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (WHO/NREVSS) collaborating laboratories in Washington tested 487
specimens, with 63 specimens positive for influenza. Thirty five specimens were positive for influenza B, 17 were
positive for influenza A (H1N1) and 11 were positive for influenza A (subtyping not performed). During week 5, the
proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) was 1.3 percent, above the baseline of 1.1 percent. Twelve
lab-confirmed influenza deaths have been reported for the 2015-2016 season to date, including one pediatric death.

                        National
During week 5 (Jan. 31-Feb. 6), flu activity increased slightly in the United States The proportion of people seeing their
health care provider for influenza-like illness (ILI) increased from 2.2% to 2.4%, which is above the national baseline
(2.1%).. There are localized pockets of high activity in parts of the country and the percentage of respiratory specimens
testing positive for flu in clinical laboratories continues to increase. H1N1 viruses are most common at this time. Puerto
Rico and one state (Arizona) experienced high ILI activity. Two states (Arkansas and Connecticut) experienced moderate
ILI activity. New York City and 8 states (Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and
Utah) experienced low ILI activity. 38 states experienced minimal ILI activity.

                        Immunization Reminder
It is not too late to give influenza vaccine. This season?s vaccine preparation appears to be a good match with strains
circulating locally and across the country.
