by Hayley Crombleholme Friday, December 13th 2019

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — When kids catch the flu, it can lead to pneumonia, and even death in rare cases. But a recent study found that only a fraction of childcare centers require students or staff to get vaccinated.

In Salt Lake County, flu activity is still low, but flu cases were on the rise last week. Health department data shows two people have died from flu-related illness in the county this season.

“We are extremely saddened for the families and friends of these young individuals,” said Amy Carter, epidemiologist with the Weber-Morgan Health Department. She said the two individuals, both juveniles whose names were not released, had different strains of the flu virus.

Report Date: January 19 to January 25, 2020 (MMWR week 4)

                What’s New This Week
Influenza activity is high in Utah, highlighting the need to take action to prevent the flu including getting the vaccine, staying home when you are sick, and calling your doctor if you think you have the flu. Both influenza B (58%) and influenza A (42%) are currently being detected, with the majority of influenza A viruses being H1N1 subtype. Hospitalizations have continued to increase, 535 have been reported so far this season, including 100 in the most recent report week. The overall severity is considered High because of high levels of Influenza-like Illness and positive laboratory results. However, the number of hospitalizations and Pneumonia and Influenza deaths are at expected levels for this time of year.
Sadly, two influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported to UDOH during this report period. While the cases were from the same area, they had different strains of influenza and don’t represent an increased public health risk. Getting a flu shot has been shown to save lives in children. It’s not too late to get a flu vaccine.

                    What’s New This Week
Influenza activity remains widespread in Utah, highlighting the need to take action to prevent the flu including getting the vaccine, staying home when you are sick, and calling your doctor if you think you have the flu. Both influenza B (55%) and influenza A (45%) are currently being detected, with the majority of influenza A viruses being H1N1 subtype. Hospitalizations have continued to increase, 641 have been reported so far this season, including 78 in the most recent report week. The overall severity is considered High because of high levels of Influenza-like Illness and positive laboratory results. However, the number of hospitalizations and Pneumonia and Influenza deaths are at expected levels for this time of year.

Influenza-Like Illness reports to UDOH have been delayed this reporting period due to technical issues. Therefore, data included in this report are from the previous report week. Preliminary data analysis from partial reports indicate the ILI activity level is still “high”.
