State focuses on most serious swine flu cases

SALT LAKE CITY ? The Utah Department of Health is advising doctors to consider influenza cases to be swine flu and begin treatment right away instead of testing to confirm it.

Department Director Dr. David Sundwall says the virus is spreading again throughout the state. Tests have shown that about 95 percent of influenza activity in the state has been swine flu.

Sundwall says the state wants to focus on the most serious cases and will test only those patients who require hospitalization.

The state also is no longer keeping a cumulative total of confirmed cases, which was over 700 as of Monday. Utah will continue to tally the number of hospitalizations, which was 90 on Thursday, including two swine flu-related deaths.
