Dallas County?s flu death toll rises to 26
Dallas County?s death toll from the flu climbed to 26 along with a record number of hospitalizations in the first week of January, according to a report released Friday.
The fatalities represent nine new deaths since the county?s last surveillance report a week ago.
?The outbreak is more severe this year than the last couple years,? said Dr. Christopher Perkins, medical director of Dallas County Health and Human Services.
Denton County confirmed its third flu-related death Friday ? a Highland Village woman in her 80s.
The JPS Health Network in Fort Worth also reported Friday that hospitalized flu patients appear to be sicker this flu season than last, staying nearly two days longer on average.

It's flu season, a fact you've probably noticed if you've experienced a bout of achy, feverish misery, or if you've seen the equally feverish news reports on the mounting death toll in North Texas, which reached 21 yesterday.
To put this all in context, we spoke with Dallas County Health Director Zach Thompson. Here are the key takeaways.
What's with all the deaths?
Twenty-one deaths (17 in Dallas County) seems like a lot, but it's about on par with previous flu seasons, which annually claim around 25,000 lives nationwide. The difference this go-round -- and the reason you're seeing so many death-tallying news reports -- is that this is the first year Dallas County has tracked adult flu deaths.
This, Thompson says, helps local public health officials get a better understanding of the scope and severity of the outbreak...Leave a comment:

FORT WORTH -- The Wooten family is still spending their days and nights huddled inside a hospital room at JPS Hospital in Fort Worth. But at least now there is hope.
In late December, Julie Wooten Shelley arrived at the emergency room with severe flu-like symptoms. There was fever, dizziness, and trouble breathing.

Dallas - Alice Jones, 29-Year-Old Healthy Mother Of Three, Dies Of Flu
When Alice Jones came down with the flu last Thursday, the 29-year-old aspiring nurse thought it was the common cold.
While her husband, Darrell, got better, Alice's symptoms persisted. On Saturday he brought her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with influenza. On Monday the mother of three died. She had no underlying medical conditions, WFAA reports.

Dallas, Denton counties confirm 19 flu deaths
DALLAS ? Health officials in Dallas and Denton counties have confirmed 19 flu-related deaths as medical experts urge people to get vaccinated.
Dallas County Health and Human Services confirms 17 adult flu deaths since late December.
The Denton County Health Department on Monday confirmed the deaths of one adult and a girl. Both people from the Carrollton area had underlying medical problems.
The Texas Department of State Health Services says medical providers are seeing an increase in flu across the state. Current vaccines are designed to protect against H1N1, commonly known as swine flu.
Child flu deaths must be reported to Texas health officials, but adult flu deaths are not tracked statewide.

Dallas: 29-yr-old mom of 3 dies days after symptoms start (Husband reports both A & B strains involved)
Symptoms started on Saturday & she coded on her way to a CAT scan on Monday. Her husband says she had no known health problems, (she was working while he was in school), and is not aware of her having had a flu vaccine this year.

Several deaths linked to swine flu in Texas
The virulent H1N1 strain of influenza, also known as the swine flu, has been tied to several deaths in Texas including a Euless man who died last month, officials said.
A Houston teen, whose identity was not released, died late last week from the flu, said Kathy Barton, spokeswoman for the city?s health department.
Several adult deaths related to flu, including three in Dallas and four in Beaumont, have been reported by city or county officials. But there is no official statewide tally because health departments are not required to report adult flu-related deaths to the state.
In Tarrant County, health officials believe 30-year-old Dustin Wright of Euless died Dec. 5 of complications related to H1N1.

Three men with other health problems recently died from H1N1 in Harris County, according to Tricia Bentley, a spokeswoman for the county?s Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Northeast Texas Public Health District reported three deaths in Longview.
One person has died in Austin, Travis County officials said, while five others were in critical condition at Seton Medical Center Austin.
Five people have died recently from flu-like illnesses while patients at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, said Sheri Ulmer, Beaumont?s public health director.
They ranged in age from 26 to 67, and all had pneumonia, a common complication of influenza.
Test results show that two of the five tested positive for H1N1. Those two are from Jasper and Bexar counties. The other three were from Jefferson, Orange and Hardin counties.
