Two patients at Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin died recently who apparently experienced flu-like symptoms, a hospital official told The Lufkin News on Wednesday.

A Roma family gathered Monday afternoon to mourn the loss of 27 year-old Juan Rodriguez.
His death could be the first H1N1 flu death in the Rio Grande Valley.
Action 4 contacted health officials but could not get confirmation because of the holiday.
"He was so young and full of life, then all of the sudden they tell you he's not going to make it," his cousin Yesenia Rodriguez said. "It's still very hard to believe."

Texas: H1N1 Kills Three In Midland And Odessa
WEST TEXAS -- According to officials, at least three people have died just this month alone from the H1N1 virus, also known as Swine Flu in the Midland Odessa area.
Two people in Ector County died from the illness and one in Midland.
There is one other confirmed case in Midland, and officials from Midland Memorial Hospital tell us they are in stable condition.
Health officials say the best way to avoid H1N1 is to get vaccinated.

CORPUS CHRISTI ? Flu is on the rise and even though the predominant strain is covered by the vaccine, some people who were vaccinated are testing positive.

Brian Garner?s two children, 1 and 6 years old, contracted the flu this year even though both were vaccinated in October at their pediatrician?s office.
?My daughter wakes up Christmas Day ready for Santa Claus and she had a 101 degree fever,? Garner said. ?We got her this little scooter and she wanted to play on it outside, but then her fever jumped to 102 and we had to pull her back inside.?
Two days later, Garner, 36, headed to an urgent care center with flu-like symptoms.
?It was nuts,? he said. ?I waited two hours before I saw anybody.?
He was diagnosed with the flu. A day later, his son tested positive. On Monday, his wife was diagnosed, too. All four took the antiviral drug Tamiflu but it seemed to work best for his son, who started taking the drugs early.
Dr. Salim Surani, a lung doctor, said the flu does appear to be more intense this year, striking healthy people in their 20s to 40s. But many of the patients he?s seeing did not get vaccinated, he said. ..Leave a comment:

Nacogdoches Co. has first confirmed H1N1 virus death

...East Texas News did some digging and learned that the man was an inmate at the Nacogdoches County Jail when he was first admitted to the hospital for flu-like symptoms on Dec. 5. A Nacogdoches County Jail spokesman confirmed that the man's name was Carol Keith Moore.
The illness began as bacterial pneumonia. According to jail officials, Moore spent the night of Dec. 5 at the hospital, and was released back to the jail the next day. However, because jail administrator Joe Evans was concerned that Moore could still be contagious, the inmate was sent back to the hospital.
Evans said within 24 hours, Moore was placed in a medically induced coma to drain fluid from his lungs. Family and friends said Moore remained on a respirator for 22 days...Leave a comment:

HIDALGO COUNTY, TX ? Hidalgo County, along with the state of Texas, has seen occurrences of influenza during this year?s Influenza Season becoming more prevalent as the season progresses.
Hidalgo County has 18 estimated cases of Influenza A- H1N1 in the County as of December 26, 2013. There are currently 4 adults hospitalized for other medical diagnoses, which have been complicated by H1N1. Austin Area Hospitals See Spike In Flu Cases
Seton hospitals in the Austin area say they're seeing an early and more severe spike in the number of flu cases -- and there's been one H1N1 death confirmed so far in Travis County Seton officials say in the last two weeks the number of flu patients doubled from about 200 to 400 confirmed cases. And five patients with the H1N1 virus were put on a special heart-lung machine to help them breathe.

Hidalgo County swine flu cases increase to 9; none fatal
McALLEN ? The Hidalgo County Health Department confirmed new numbers Monday afternoon of the number of residents with the H1N1 virus ? known as swine flu ? and the numbers will probably increase.
County health Director Eddie Olivarez said that there are nine confirmed cases of people with H1N1 ? six adults and three children.
Of the nine, no one has died, though four are currently hospitalized because they had other medical conditions that complicated their recovery, he said Monday.

Flu cases flooding Crossroads area doctors' offices
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports widespread influenza activity in Texas - and Victoria County is no exception.
"We have experienced an unusually high number of cases, comparable to the 2009 H1N1 outbreak," said Dr. John McNeill, owner and physician of Twin Fountains Walk-In Health Clinics. "It's safe to assume that the flu shot is working well and that not many people have had it."
Influenza Types A and B have been reported in the county, and the H1N1 strain, which is included in the vaccine, is probably the most common, said Dr. Bain Cate, director of the Victoria City-County Health Department.
"People procrastinate, but there is no good reason - except an allergy to the vaccine's ingredients - to wait," Cate said.
On Friday alone, McNeill confirmed 58 cases of Type A influenza at his two clinics, and the virus does not typically peak until January at the earliest.

18 cases of H1N1 flu in Hidalgo County
McALLEN ? There have been six confirmed Hidalgo County cases of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, the county health director said.
Out of the six cases, one was a child under the age of 10, one was a teenager, and the rest were adults, said Eddie Olivares, director of the Hidalgo County Health Department.
There have been no fatalities as a result of the flu strain, he said.
