At least five flu related deaths confirmed in Gregg County

At least five flu related deaths confirmed in Gregg County

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - On Tuesday, a Gregg County justice of the peace confirmed that there have been at least five flu related deaths in Gregg County so far this flu season.

Health officials said exact numbers for East Texas are difficult to get. One of the reasons there is no exact number may be because child flu deaths must be reported to Texas health officials, but adult flu deaths are not tracked statewide.

The Gregg County justice of the peace said that the five deaths he knows about are all white males, between the ages of 20 and 40, who did not get the flu shot.

Young Father Dies After Flu-Like Symptoms

A San Antonio man suffering from flu-like symptoms dies less than twenty-four hours after checking into the hospital.

Family members of 26-year-old Juan Armando Cruz say the young father died of complications from pneumonia last Thursday.

Cruz had been feeling sick for several days when he went to the emergency room at Southwest General Hospital on New Year?s Day.

"He was so healthy, so young," said mother-in-law Victoria Ortiz. "We thought they would give him medicine and he'd come home. But it didn't happen like that."

McALLEN ? Influenza is on the rise across the state, and Hidalgo County is witnessing the deadly consequences.

As of Thursday, Hidalgo County Health and Human Services reported six people have died, including a 7-year-old, from the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.

?While the deaths are certainly tragic, the number of cases falls within the average range of annual fatalities during flu season,? an HHS statement says.

The five adults had pre-existing medical conditions, such as morbid obesity and diabetes, that made them more vulnerable, officials said. The number of deaths from flu in the county can usually range between 11 and 137...
