Break out the face masks? An alarming flu map shows just how large Houston's problem is

It seems that nearly everyone has come down with the flu this season, an overstatement not so far from the truth considering the epidemic's early start and widespread reach on a local, state and national level.
Haven't had the misfortune of contracting it yet? Take note of the most recent report released by the Houston Department of Health and Human Services, where you'll find influenza activity according to ZIP code ? and then stay far, far away from those ZIP codes hardest hit. ..

2 flu-related deaths in Beaumont linked to H1N1
By Brooke Crum
Published 10:02 am, Monday, December 23, 2013
The number of cases of influenza-like illness reported to the Beaumont Health Department has increased in the past two weeks, including two that resulted in death from complications.
Across the state, flu is on the rise, especially the 2009 strain of the H1N1 virus, previously known as swine flu.
The two people who died from flu complications in Beaumont had H1N1, which was confirmed by the state, said Sherry Ulmer, Beaumont Public Health Director.
...
The two people in Beaumont who died had "underlying health conditions," which put them at risk for developing flu complications such as bacterial pneumonia, ear infections and dehydration, Ulmer said.

Re: Two of the three Harris County H1N1 deaths had significant underlying health conditions
H1N1 confirmed in at least 3 Harris deaths
...
The death confirmations come after Montgomery County officials confirmed their second case of H1N1 virus earlier this week. The unidentified patient is being treated at an area hospital, spokeswoman Jennifer Nichols-Contella said in a written statement. Officials are also performing further testing in six other cases, including the deaths of four people who suffered flu-like symptoms.
Texas public health officials say every region of the state, including Montgomery and Harris counties, is seeing intense flu activity this season, which could result, as in past years, in at least several hundred deaths.
In Harris County, hospital emergency room visits for flu-like symptoms are at a five-year high.
