2 flu-related deaths in Beaumont linked to H1N1

The number of cases of influenza-like illness reported to the Beaumont Health Department has increased in the past two weeks, including two that resulted in death from complications.

Across the state, flu is on the rise, especially the 2009 strain of the H1N1 virus, previously known as swine flu.

The two people who died from flu complications in Beaumont had H1N1, which was confirmed by the state, said Sherry Ulmer, Beaumont Public Health Director.

The two people in Beaumont who died had "underlying health conditions," which put them at risk for developing flu complications such as bacterial pneumonia, ear infections and dehydration, Ulmer said.

Family mourns passing of man who died from H1N1

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Harris County family having a tough holiday after their loved one passed away from the flu. Now they hope no other family has to go through the same pain.

The family of Jose Vasques Trigueros remembers him as a caring father and grandfather.

"He'll come visit his grandchildren and bring them candy and just be very lovable. He was a very good person," his daughter-in-law Himelda Salinas said.

The 50-year-old plumber started feeling ill early last week while on a job with his two sons.

"He said that he was kind of feeling bad," Salinas said.

Travis County confirms H1N1 death

The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed an H1N1 death.

A spokesperson told FOX 7 a 30-year-old woman died after battling the virus in an Austin hospital for nearly two weeks.

It is unclear if this is the same H1N1 death reported by Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services last week. (see post#7 above - Ro)

HEALTH DEPARTMENT: Flu Responsible For Three Deaths In Beaumont
BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel

The flu is responsible for a third death in the city, according to the Beaumont Health Director.

Sherry Ulmer says all three cases are adults.

The first two are linked to H1N1.

The department is waiting to learn which strain is responsible for the most recent death.

According to the health director, the first two victims had underlying medical conditions.

Jeri Chapman wants her son?s death to have meaning, and she is counting on all of us to help her accomplish that.

You see, her son, Jeremy Chapman, 37, died a week ago at Good Shepherd Medical Center from the flu.

Chapman was one of at least two people who have died in Longview after being infected with a strain of H1N1, or so-called swine flu. At least three more have died in the Houston area, and health officials say more deaths in Longview and statewide may have been flu related...

12 News has learned the Beaumont Health Department is awaiting lab results from three people who recently died in a local hospital to confirm if they died from a strain of H1N1...

...Ulmer says all five people have died since December 13, and all five have died at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont. Ulmer says that doesn't mean there have not been additional deaths in other hospitals, but that the other hospitals may not yet have reported them because of the holidays.

She says the first three were residents from Jasper County, Bexar County and Hardin County...

City confirms season's first pediatric flu death

The Houston Health Department on Thursday confirmed the first pediatric flu death in the Houston area this season.

Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the department, would identify the victim only as a teenager. She said the victim is believed to have been infected with H1N1, the most predominant flu strain this season...

HOUSTON ? A teenager from the Houston area died from H1N1, according to the City of Houston Health Department.

As of Thursday, there were 13 confirmed deaths from the H1N1 Flu in the greater Houston area. Katy Barton with the City of Houston Health Department confirmed the death on Thursday...

Five dead from H1N1 in Beaumont

The Beaumont Public Health Department is urging everyone to get a flu shot, which protects against H1N1, or swine flu. So far, 13 people have died from swine flu in the greater Houston area. Five of those people died in Beaumont. A Beaumont mother lost her son a few weeks ago to a sudden, flu-like illness. They both thought he had a cold until his symptoms quickly escalated. She took him to the emergency room when he said he couldn't breathe. Keith Eddingston died at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital on December 13. His mother warns people experiencing flu-like or cold symptoms to go to the doctor and get a chest x-ray.

The sequences in this Analytic Report describe a high level of genetic activity at the Hemagglutinin antigenic area between aa155 and aa158 with 5 amino variations and 4 silent revisions.   HA 225G is present in quasi-species on 2 American samples and as dominant form in 2 tropical countries. The Dominican Republic HA 225G Low Reactor appears on a TamiFlu Resistant strain.  Drug Resistance is also found in 2 US sequences and 1 South American case.

Haven't had the misfortune of contracting it yet? Take note of the most recent report released by the Houston Department of Health and Human Services, where you'll find influenza activity according to ZIP code ? and then stay far, far away from those ZIP codes hardest hit. ..
