The number of cases of influenza-like illness reported to the Beaumont Health Department has increased in the past two weeks, including two that resulted in death from complications.
Across the state, flu is on the rise, especially the 2009 strain of the H1N1 virus, previously known as swine flu.
The two people who died from flu complications in Beaumont had H1N1, which was confirmed by the state, said Sherry Ulmer, Beaumont Public Health Director.

The two people in Beaumont who died had "underlying health conditions," which put them at risk for developing flu complications such as bacterial pneumonia, ear infections and dehydration, Ulmer said.
