TN Department of Health confirms 11th pediatric death from flu

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/WMC) -- The Tennessee Department of Health confirmed that 11 children have died from the flu this season.
Officials said three deaths in Middle and six deaths in East Tennessee and two deaths were confirmed in West Tennessee, WMC reported.

UPDATE: 3 children die from flu in Hamilton County

IUPDATE: A third child has died from the flu in Hamilton County, a Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department report confirmed.
The report says the child died during the last week of January.

Pediatric flu deaths on the rise in Tenn.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Another child in Tennessee has died from the flu. The total is now up to 10. One child has died in West Tennessee.
Flu season still has several weeks left, and the number of people getting sick and dying is continuing to grow. According to the Tennessee Health Department, only one child died during last flu season. During the 2017-2018 flu season ten children died.
Doctors say different complications of the flu can be deadly to different children, but they know a flu shot will protect anyone.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The family of a child who died from the flu earlier this week is advocating for flu shots following her sudden passing.
Twelve-year-old Paloma Olivia Harris died suddenly of the flu on Jan. 14 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Her uncle, Mitch Geary, speaking on behalf of the family says they didn’t see this coming at all.
“You never expect anything like this. I just thought it was a normal flu like you hear about all the time.” Geary said
Paloma is described by her family as outgoing and energetic. She played sports at her school and was a member of the band. She only battled the flu for a few days before her passing.
“We took her to the doctor and it just jumped on top of us a lot quicker than anybody would expect.” Geary said.
Her family is now taking this opportunity to encourage others to get their flu shots...Leave a comment:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed at least four flu deaths across the state.
The department said Wednesday that two deaths occurred in Middle Tennessee, while two more were confirmed in the eastern part of the state. However, only influenza deaths involving pediatric patients and pregnant women are reportable in Tennessee.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) — Officials at the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed that four influenza deaths have been reported during the 2019-2020 flu season.
Only pediatric and pregnant woman deaths due to influenza are reportable in Tennessee, and all four of the confirmed deaths were pediatric patients, according to Elizabeth Hart, associate director of the Tennessee Office of Communications and Media Relations.
