KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Monroe County School System will be closed on Thursday and Friday do to low attendance.
School officials made the announcement Wednesday afternoon, citing illness as the number one cause of students staying home from school.

</td></tr></tbody></table>The Pineville Independent School District in Bell County, Kentucky was closed Wednesday and will also be closed Thursday and Friday due to illness.
According to the district's website, a significant number of students have called in sick with stomach viruses and above average temperatures. There have been no confirmed cases of H1N1 in the school system.

I am a teacher in KNOX County Schools. I have had over half of my class absent for a week and then returning to school still coughing, sneezing, and lethargic. I have had to miss the last two days of school myself due to illness contracted while at work. If the CDC recommends that we stay away from sick people, why are we having school right now? No amount of hand washing will prevent us from getting sick when this is where much of the transferring of illness is taking place.

Grainger Co. schools closed Thursday, Friday

Graigner County schools will be closed Thursday and Friday due to illness, school administrators announced Wednesday.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Graigner County schools will be closed Thursday and Friday due to illness, school administrators announced Wednesday.


School officials say at least two schools had more than 20 percent of their students out. There was a 13 percent absentee rate for the entire district.
