UPDATE: Second Swine Flu Death Reported
Le Bonheur Sees Tapering Off In New Numbers

TOM WILEMON | The Daily News

A second child who contracted swine flu has died at Le Bonheur Children?s Medical Center. But the vast majority of the cases coming through the its emergency room do not require hospitalization, according to statistics the hospital released today.

Jennifer Parris, a spokesperson for Le Bonheur, said a girl with underlying health problems died on Wednesday. Her death follows the Sept. 7 death of a 13-year-old boy at the hospital. No other details about the girl were released.

From Aug. 1 to Sept. 23, physicians in the hospital?s emergency department have treated 5,128 children with flu-like symptoms, but only 103 of those have been admitted to the hospital. Of the children admitted, 18 were sick enough to be put in the hospital?s intensive care unit.

So many parents have taken their children to the hospital that Le Bonheur had to set up an air-conditioned triage tent.
Hospital physicians have advised parents to first consult with their family doctors when a child becomes sick because most cases of the flu are mild and do not require hospitalization.

In recent days, the volume of patients at Le Bonheur with flu-like symptoms has tapered off.
The hospital treated 316 children (45.9 percent with flu symptoms) on Monday, 303 children (48.5 percent with flu symptoms) on Tuesday and 247 (36.4 percent with flu symptoms) on Wednesday.
