KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- North Middle School and Greenback School in Loudon County, along with Madisonville Middle School in Monroe County, are closed the rest of the week due to illness.

It's not clear if there's a specific illness behind the school closings.

At least three East Tennessee schools will be closed the remainder of the week due to illness, school system officials said today.

In Loudon County, North Middle School and Greenback School, a pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade facility, will be shuttered the rest of the week, said Joan Lovelace, administrative assistant to the director of schools.

At North Middle, 105 students were out sick as of Monday. That represents 16 percent of the student body, she said. At least 11 teachers were also absent.

At Greenback School, 178 students were out sick Monday - 21 percent of their student body, she said.

In Monroe County, Madisonville Middle School has had a high absenteeism rate with some students showing flu symptoms, Tim Blankenship, assistant director of schools said today. Countywide, the attendance rate has been 93 percent, he said.

The school will close Wednesday through Friday.

Monroe County school system has 13 schools.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
