First probable H1N1 death in Madison County

    The Jackson Sun
    ? September 14, 2009

The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department has confirmed the first death likely related to the pandemic H1N1 Influenza A virus in Madison County, according to a news release.

A woman in her mid-20s died over the weekend at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, the release said. Her name has not been released.

Tests confirmed she had Influenza A, which has a high probability of being H1N1, health officials said.

This death further emphasizes the importance of preparing for the H1N1 flu, officials said. Even though the virus has been relatively mild, cases like this remind us that this virus can be deadly. Everyone is encouraged to follow the tips listed below to prevent the spread of the flu:

    Practice good hygiene.

Wash your hands regularly with hot water and soap.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your sleeve.

Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers between hand washings.

If you are sick, stay home except to seek medical care.

    Monitor your health carefully.

Take the flu vaccine when available.
