    Flu hits schools in Aurora, absences soar

    Aurora -- Illness hammered Valley Christian Academy so hard that the school was closed Dec. 12 after multiple absences all week.

    More than 80 students called in sick Dec. 9, about one-third of the school enrollment of 237, according to Administrator Dale Moncrief.

    "The flu really did a number on us," Moncrief said of the school that houses grades K to 8. "It hit us like a whirlwind. In 17 years, I don't remember a day with 80 students out...

    ...In Aurora schools, Superintendent Russ Bennett said the district was hit harder by illnesses earlier in the week of Dec. 8-12, but absences were fewer by the end of the week.

    "That's a positive trend," he said.

    Aurora's total absences for the five days between Dec. 8 and 12 were 252, 291, 283, 273 and 290, according to Mary Kohanski, administrative assistant to the superintendent. The enrollment currently is 2,916...
