North Carolina: Influenza Surveillance for 2015-16 season

    WEEK 10: ENDING MARCH 12, 2016


    Statewide Updates
     Influenza-like illness (ILI) increased slightly this week.
     The geographic spread of flu was WIDESPREAD for week 10
    ending 3/12/2016.
     Of the 30 samples submitted to the State Laboratory of Public
    Health (SLPH) for viral testing this week, 10 were positive for
    influenza A (H1N1), 1 positive for Flu A (H3) and 1 positive for influenza A (unknown).
     Hospital-based Public Health Epidemiologists (PHEs) reported 284 positive influenza results out of
    1151 samples tested during week 10 (ending 3/12/2016); 138 positive for influenza A(unknown),
    116 positive for influenza A(H1), 29 positive for influenza B, and 1 positive for influenza A(H3).

      WEEK 11: ENDING MARCH 19, 2016


      Statewide Updates
       Influenza-like illness (ILI) increased slightly this week.
       The geographic spread of flu was WIDESPREAD for
      week 11 ending 3/19/2016.
       Of the 15 samples submitted to the State Laboratory of
      Public Health (SLPH) for viral testing this week, 8
      were positive for influenza A (H1N1), 1 positive for
      Flu A (H3) and 1 positive for influenza B.
       Hospital-based Public Health Epidemiologists (PHEs) reported 271 positive influenza results out of
      1175 samples tested during week 11 (ending 3/19/2016); 131 positive for influenza A(H1), 92
      positive for influenza A(unknown), 45 positive for influenza B, and 3 positive for influenza A(H3).

         Of the 25 samples submitted to the State Laboratory of
        Public Health (SLPH) for viral testing this week, 14 were
        positive for influenza A (H1N1), 3 positive for Flu A (H3) and 2 positive for influenza B.
         Hospital-based Public Health Epidemiologists (PHEs) reported 178 positive influenza results out of
        1039 samples tested during week 12 (ending 3/26/2016); 105 positive for influenza A(H1), 43
        positive for influenza A(unknown), 27 positive for influenza B, and 3 positive for influenza A(H3)

            14 ending 4/9/2016.
             Of the 26 samples submitted to the State Laboratory
            of Public Health (SLPH) for viral testing this week,
            13 were positive for influenza A (H1N1), 2 positive
            for influenza B, and 2 positive for Flu A (H3).
             Hospital-based Public Health Epidemiologists (PHEs) reported 99 positive influenza results out of
            778 samples tested during week 14 (ending 4/9/2016); 38 positive for influenza A(H1), 35 positive

            Flu-related death total increases to 37 in state, including first child

            The number of North Carolinians dying from a flu-related illness has increased to 37 for the 2015-16 season, including the first child victim, state health officials said Thursday.
            There were five deaths for the week that ended April 9.

            There also were three additional deaths from previous weeks of the season, which officially began Oct. 1 and ended March 31.
            Last week?s deaths included one victim between the ages of 5 and 17, one between 25 and 40, three between 50 and 64 and three there were 65 and older.
            Altogether, one victim was between 5 and 17; eight victims were between 25 and 49; 16 were 50 to 64 years old, an increase of two; and 12 were in the 65-and-older group, an increase of one.
            One flu-related death ? an adult in Western North Carolina ? was reported before the official start of the season.

               Of the 32 samples submitted to the
              State Laboratory of Public Health
              (SLPH) for viral testing this week, 9
              were positive for influenza A (H1N1),
              5 were positive for influenza B, and 3
              were positive for influenza A (H3).
               Hospital-based Public Health Epidemiologists (PHEs) reported 72 positive influenza results out of
              595 samples tested during week 15 (ending 4/16/2016); 34 positive for influenza A(H1), 24 positive
              for influenza B, 14 positive for influenza A(unknown), and 0 positive for influenza A(H3).

                 Of the 25 samples submitted to the State

                viral testing this week, 8 were positive for
                influenza A (H1N1), 6 were positive for
                influenza B, and a was positive for
