    The Jefferson County Public Health Service is warning of an early season flu outbreak in the Carthage area.

    In a statement Thursday, the Health Service reported 47 cases of "influenza A and influenza like illness" and noted "reports of Influenza A this early in the flu season are unusual."

    "As a result, the (Public Health Service) is urging everyone 6 months of age and older to receive a yearly influenza vaccination as soon as possible..."

    A flu outbreak in the Carthage area that hit nearly 50 people is settling down.

    Over the weekend, Jefferson County Public Health observed only a handful of new cases in the Carthage area and on Monday absences at West Carthage Elementary were back to normal...

      Influenza is so widespread in Northern New York that the Jefferson County Public Health Service cannot keep up with the number of confirmed cases.

      Jefferson County health planner Faith E. Lustik said the last total the agency had was 733 laboratory-confirmed cases as of Dec. 12. Ms. Lustik said she couldn?t even guess what the number would be now, because there are several new confirmed cases being reported in the county every day...
