Greg Hamill, a 12-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, died Friday at Methodist Hospital.
Hamill, 43, who was a detective, was admitted to the hospital last week. He died of complications of the H1N1 strain of influenza, said Officer James Shade, a police spokesman.
Hamill's organs will be donated, Shade said.
?He genuinely cared about people,? Shade said. ?He had a huge heart.?
Officer Michael Pecha, another police spokesman, asked area residents to keep Hamill's wife, Vanessa, and their two children in their thoughts and prayers.
