  • Mississippi's first case of flu this season reported in Tate County

OXFORD -- A Tate County resident is Mississippi's first confirmed influenza case in the 2011-12 flu season, the state Department of Health says.

State health officials would not provide further information about the patient but said the flu case was confirmed through the department's laboratory.

"This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week, which, in conjunction with our first lab-confirmed case of the year, serves as a great reminder that it's definitely time to get your flu shot," State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier said.

"The flu shot takes one to two weeks to produce immunity, and although flu season usually peaks in January through March, it sometimes reaches high levels as early as December."

Two flu-related deaths were reported in Tate County and one DeSoto County child died from the flu in late 2009-early 2010, according to the Mississippi State Health Department's website.
