    Flu "outbreak" at Bridgewater Elementary

    Posted: Thursday, October 15, 2009 9:59 am

    NORTHFIELD ?

The absence of five Bridgewater Elementary students from school Wednesday with flu-like symptoms categorizes the school as having an influenza ?outbreak.?

The state Department of Health requires Minnesota schools report when more than 5 percent of their student population or three or more elementary schoolers in the same classroom are absent due to flu-like symptoms.

Bridgewater?s status will show up on next week?s report, which runs from Oct. 11 to 17.

This week?s report, which covers the week of Oct. 4, says influenza activity has increased across the state and lists 215 schools as reporting outbreaks of the flu. None of those are in the Northfield School District.

While Bridgewater?s absenteeism due to flu-like symptoms is considered an outbreak, absenteeism across the district is less than 1.6 percent, well within the normal range when compared to prior year absentee rates, according to the district?s Web site.
